In the stimulating year of 1972, a vibrant social entrepreneur and political figure named Cyril Taylor gave birth to the idea of Richmond College, then known as "The American College in London". Fascinatingly, the foundations of this institution stemmed from Taylor's leadership at the American Institute For Foreign Study (AIFS). Tracing its roots back to a former Methodist theological college, part of the prestigious University of London, founded in 1843, the campus of Richmond unraveled a tapestry of rich history and academic potential.
Taylor's keen eye recognized the untapped potential of the abandoned theological school, which was already being used by AIFS for their study abroad programs. In a strategic move, AIFS secured half of the 10-acre campus for a whopping £300,000 – an investment equivalent to a cool £3.82 million today – inclusive of the main buildings and inviting front lawns. Thus, a new chapter in the academic sphere began, crafting a unique platform for American liberal arts education in London.
As the institution expanded its academic repertoire, in 1978, a secondary campus unfurled in the posh locale of Kensington's St Albans Grove and Ansdell Street. This vibrant new addition aimed to serve third and fourth year students along with the college's US Study Abroad Programme, further strengthening Richmond's educational pillars.
Originally focusing on providing study abroad programs to US students, Richmond reimagined its trajectory in 1981. It secured a valuable license to award US undergraduate degrees from the Washington DC Board of Education and formal accreditation from the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (later known as the Middle States Commission on Higher Education). This marked a decisive shift in Richmond's educational philosophy and offerings.
Fast forward to 1988, a year that earmarked a tremendous growth spurt for the university. Diana, Princess of Wales herself echoed this sentiment by inaugurating the extension of the university's Kensington campus on Young Street in March that year.
In 1995, AIFS decided to grant academic independence to Richmond, spinning it off as a non-profit educational institution. This allowed Richmond to explore deeper academic territories, leading to the launch of its first postgraduate degree – a Master of Business Administration (MBA) – in 1998.
In the period between 1996 and 2018, Richmond secured a unique position by issuing British degrees validated by the Open University. May 2018 brought another feather in Richmond's cap as the university received the Taught Degree Awarding Powers in the UK, allowing students the privilege of dual degree certificates - from both the US and UK.
However, the tide began to turn in December 2019. Lawrence Abeln, the then university president, chose to resign following a complaint he filed against the Cyril Taylor Charitable Foundation - the university's primary financial backers. This resulted in financial discord that ultimately led the board of trustees to suspend student recruitment for the spring term in January 2020.
But, Richmond bounced back in March 2020, forging a formidable alliance with the Hong Kong-based China Education Group (CEG). This strategic partnership propelled Richmond's students towards promising internships and exchange programs across CEG's universities and institutes in China and Australia, bolstering Richmond's global footprint.
Fast forward to 2021, the university decided to vacate most of its buildings in the Kensington area, retaining one site on Kensington High Street. With an eye on the future, it announced a relocation of its Richmond campus to the vibrant Chiswick Business Park in the summer of 2022. As the spring of 2023 dawned, the Kensington High Street location bid farewell to student courses. Thus, Richmond continues to evolve, adapt, and innovate, writing new chapters in the history of international education.
