History University of St Andrews

St Andrews University's history stretches back to 1410, thanks to a group of ambitious Augustinian clergy. These folks were tired of being tossed out of every prominent University of the time, from Paris with its Avignon schism to Oxford and Cambridge with their Anglo-Scottish wars. Determined to create an educating society, they set up shop in St Andrews and started offering insightful lectures in topics such as divinity, logic, philosophy, and law.

This innovative educational approach quickly piqued interest - Bishop Henry Wardlaw showered these pioneers with privileges on 28th February 1411-12. However, the society craved more - they wanted recognition as a university. They knocked on the doors of the Avignon Pope Benedict XIII, who acknowledged their plea with a series of papal bulls dated August 28th, 1413. Such was the beginnings of this beloved institution!

Two decades passed and the university’s recognition amplified. In 1432, none other than King James I of Scotland gave his royal seal of approval to the university's charter. Further monarchs followed in his footsteps, like King James V, who reaffirmed the university's privileges in 1532.

Fast forward to 1418, the establishment of St John's College, a centre for theology and arts, nurtured by Robert of Montrose and Lawrence of Lindores. The university continued expanding with St Salvator’s College in 1450, initiated by Bishop James Kennedy, and St Leonard’s College in 1511, introduced by Archbishop Alexander Stewart.

However, the institution wasn't without its historical highs and lows. The University faced a depressive phase in 1747 due to severe financial issues, leading to the merging of St Leonard's College with St Salvator's College. Visitor numbers dipped to less than 100 in the 18th century, as observers like Samuel Johnson deemed the institution struggling for survival.

Luckily, the 19th century brought respite. Women started receiving education at St Andrews to a level equivalent to the Master of Arts degree. A special program for women, the 'LLA Examination,' also known as Lady Literate in Arts, was introduced in 1876. It involved correspondence learning, allowing women to study at their own pace.

An even more significant breakthrough came in 1889. The Universities (Scotland) Act made it possible for women to study at St Andrews on the same level as men. One such pioneer was Agnes Forbes Blackadder, who, becoming the first woman graduate, marked a significant milestone in March 1895. This progress was mirrored by Alice Marion Umpherston becoming the university's first female lecturer the following year.

St Andrews started expanding its academic curriculum beyond classical languages and philosophical studies at the turn of the 20th century. In tandem, it established a university college at Dundee, which formally merged with St Andrews in 1897. This new college focused more on scientific and professional subjects.

Despite a tumultuous relationship between the Dundee and St Andrews, the union had a positive overall impact. It allowed St Andrews to offer degrees in coveted fields such as Medicine by 1967. However, the union ended the same year, causing St Andrews to lose its capacity to offer degrees in several disciplines.

Nevertheless, St Andrews was never down for long and quickly forged a new study path for medicine. Their continued resilience is mirrored by the St Andrews alumni who have left their mark globally, from James Wilson, a signer of the American Declaration of Independence, to the Irish-American academic, Louise Richardson, who became the first female Principal and Vice-Chancellor of St Andrews in 2009.

Today, the university continues to add chapters to its storied history, retaining its draw for students worldwide. Appreciate St Andrews for its fascinating past, and who knows - you could be a part of its magnificent future!
