History University of Stirling

Picture this. Nearly 400 years had rolled by without any new universities cropping up on Scotland's map. But in a significant twist of events, Scotland welcomed its first new university, the University of Stirling, in the sixties. The selected location experienced stiff competition from splendid sites like Falkirk, Perth, and Inverness, but ultimately, Stirling won the day.

The influential figure behind this expansion wave of universities in the UK during the 1960s was none other than Lord Robbins, author of the much-debated Robbins Review. As fate would have it, he was appointed the prestigious role of the university's first chancellor in 1968.

1967 was a red-letter day as it witnessed the completion of a stylish house for the university principal, Tom Cottrell. Its architects, Morris and Steedman, were acclaimed figures in design, so it wasn't surprising when the house earned a category A listing in 2009.

Now, let's shuttle to 1968. This was the year when the Pathfoot Building, the university's first development phase, opened its doors wide. Fascinating lecture theatres, cozy offices, and stimulating classrooms – these were not its only occupants. It even housed a delightful 'crush hall', the heartbeat of the university's evolving collection of contemporary Scottish art.

Over the years, this building underwent various modifications. In 1979, it opened its arms to welcome a Tropical Aquarium, and come 1987, a Virology Unit associated with the university's Institute of Aquaculture found its home here. The Pathfoot Building earned international recognition in 1993 when it was acknowledged as one of sixty key Scottish monuments of the post-war era by DoCoMoMo, an esteemed international conservation organisation.

In 1970, another milestone was added when development for the Cottrell Building kicked off. Named after the university's first principal, this stately building now cradles the majority of the university administration along with lecture theatres, departmental offices, classrooms, and state-of-the-art computer laboratories.

This bustling academia doesn't stop here. Nearby, you'd find the Andrew Miller Building, completed in 1971. It's the home to the University Library, Atrium and MacRobert Centre.

Jump to October 13, 1972. HM The Queen paid a visit to the university, expecting a pleasant reception, but the royals were met with a student demonstration demanding more social spaces. This incident was splashed over the media, causing a social stir. Royal visits were stalled until 2011, when Prince Edward reopened the library after a substantial refurbishment!

Fast forward to the eighties, and something unique was in the making at Stirling. An exclusive department of Business Studies, along with the Institute of Aquaculture specializing in fish farming and genetics, were set up in 1982! Following a few more pivotal moments, the university eventually embraced the 21st century with the addition of the Iris Murdoch building in 2002 and the Colin Bell Building in 2003.

Imagine the rich tales this university has to tell, and all the more it's waiting to write in the coming years! The University of Stirling represents a piece of Scotland's history, moulded into an institution fostering dreams, aspirations and breakthrough research.
