In the year 1856, a private School of Art materialized right in the heart of Southampton. Can you imagine, this humble beginning was the seed that would blossom into what we know as the Solent University today? Quite intriguing, isn't it?
It all kicked off with the Southampton College of Art, which jumped into existence from the original School of Art. Over time, the college found its companionship in other educational institutes. The first was the merger with Southampton College of Technology, lending a boost to the College of Art's breath in the area. And then along came the College of Nautical Studies at Warsash, creating a competent trio of expertise.
Fast forward to 1984, and the promising trinity united to form the Southampton Institute of Higher Education, an institution that was about to become the key player in the international educational arena, thanks to some smart partnerships in the field of business-focused, finance, accountancy and professional ACCA degrees.
This was not your average university, however! The Institute had a secret weapon up its sleeve, joining forces with Nottingham Trent University and, in some cases, stamping their certificates with its seal of validation. An acknowledgement of the Southampton Institute's reputation, this bolstered its prestige and prominence in the realm of academia.
Now, on the 12th of July, 2005 something incredible happened. The Southampton Institute morphed into a university. Not only that, but just over a month later on the 15th of August, the Institute adopted a new title, sprouting its wings as the Southampton Solent University.
However, the ambition of Solent University didn't end here. In 2005, it featured on BBC South's Inside Out, an investigative programme that recognised its commitment to adhering to academic standards, notwithstanding criticism about awarding grades for ostensibly low standards of work.
Moving ahead, the thirst for collaboration put the university on a unique path. An agreement with the New College of the Humanities in London, in 2015, marked yet another significant milestone, validating various degrees of the College.
Yet, Solent had one more surprise up its sleeve. In 2017, they received approval from none other than the Privy Council, a high-level advisory body to the monarch, for the renaming of Southampton Solent University to simply Solent University, with the new name effective from 2018.
Now, fast forward a little to April 2023, the current guiding force of Solent University is Professor James Knowles. His vision and leadership promise to take the university to even greater heights, as it continues to empower students around the world.
Understanding the history of Solent University is understanding a journey of camaraderie, adaptability and transformation. It encapsulates the spirit of the institution that's fuelled by collaboration, innovation and a forward-thinking outlook. The story continues to unfold even as we venture into the future. Who knows what exciting chapters the future holds for Solent University? Stay tuned!
