It's 1964, the Beatles are rocking the charts, and a bunch of visionaries are laying down the groundwork for something great! A year later and bam! The University of Essex is born.
Tommy, Albert, Eric, David, Dakin... these five daring dudes, all of them celebrated scholars in their right, translate their dream into reality and set up the University of Essex. Loose talk around town was that they wanted to create a university which would challenge the traditional norms of higher education. And that's just what they did!
Our first shindig, not in 1964, but in 1969 folks, was attended by none other than Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II herself! Yeah, you got that right, the "big boss" of the U.K. inaugurated the university, so you can bet we were something special even back then.
Funny thing is, the University of Essex wasn't exactly built at Essex at first. Our first batch of students was taught in London. But hey, as 1967 rolled around, we moved to our shiny new campus in Colchester. A muckle big place that sits on a land of 200 acres and overlooks the charming Wivenhoe Park.
