History University of Essex

Here's a story about a place nestled in the rolling English countryside, folks, a place that you might just want to call your second home. It's 1964, the Beatles are rocking the charts, and a bunch of visionaries are laying down the groundwork for something great! A year later and bam! The University of Essex is born.

Tommy, Albert, Eric, David, Dakin... these five daring dudes, all of them celebrated scholars in their right, translate their dream into reality and set up the University of Essex. Loose talk around town was that they wanted to create a university which would challenge the traditional norms of higher education. And that's just what they did!

Our first shindig, not in 1964, but in 1969 folks, was attended by none other than Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II herself! Yeah, you got that right, the "big boss" of the U.K. inaugurated the university, so you can bet we were something special even back then.

Funny thing is, the University of Essex wasn't exactly built at Essex at first. Our first batch of students was taught in London. But hey, as 1967 rolled around, we moved to our shiny new campus in Colchester. A muckle big place that sits on a land of 200 acres and overlooks the charming Wivenhoe Park. Us folk at Essex love a good scenic view!

Nowadays, the University of Essex is known affectionately as "Home of the Rebels", and if you think it's because we don't have a clue about how to follow rules, you are dead wrong, my friend! We honor this title because right from its establishment, Essex boomed as a center of student activism, pioneering new ways of thinking and challenging the old school norms.

And let me tell you, the University of Essex is like a mini World Cup. You see folks from all corners of the world here. When it comes to international troop, we've got a neat 140 nationalities studying on our campus. And guess what, India is a big part of that collective.

Fast forward to today, and the University of Essex is ranked in the top 25 for international outlook. And would you believe it? We've got some great Indian academicians, like ol' pal, Jyotsna Puri, heading the Department of Economics and looking at poverty reduction strategies!

University of Essex does not just provide an excellent education; it’s a vibrant mix of cultures clashing and melding together, hot momos and curry night competing with steak and ale pies. We’re all about embracing diversity, fostering acceptance, bridging the culture gap, and hey, we pulled in a Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework in 2017!

Till date, the University of Essex remains true to its core values: to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and create a vibrant and inclusive community. So, come join us. Who knows, you could be the next big thing Essex unleashes onto the world!
