In the heart of England, in the year of 1962, there was a bright spark. It flickered and glowed into what we now know as the University of Law. Now, before you snooze off into a history nap, let me assure you, this isn’t your usual run of the mill tale of an academic establishment. Fasten your seat belts for a fascinating university backstory, spiced with some just-right numbers, unforgettable folks and a dose of British stiff upper lip charm!
A group of law enthusiasts sat sipping their hot cups of tea and pondering over cookies one chilled evening. The burning question in their minds was, "How can we breed the next generation of legal eagles?" It was Professor Charles Priori who set down his tea and declared, "We should start our own institution!" And, before anyone could say ‘objection,’ the University of Law was born.
It wasn't a walk in Buckingham palace gardens though! The first years were tougher than a soccer match against Brazil. The whole idea was to change the traditional educational approach to law. We're talking about a university that tossed the playbook out the window and opted for a hands-on approach, not shy of missteps, mishaps, and smart comebacks!
In the 70s, the first International students blew into campus, swaying to the tunes of George Harrison's ‘My Sweet Lord’. Euros, Asians, Africans and a notable increase of Indian pupils. India, the land of vibrant colours and dazzling intellect, had found a fitting match in this pioneering legal institution. The globe was beginning to realise that University of Law didn't merely arm students with degrees, but shaped the advocates of tomorrow.
There was another hiccup in the year 1989 when the university shifted its foundation from Guildford to Birmingham. It was like moving the English Breakfast from the teapot to the coffee pot! But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. It was a mess, a real pickle, but they dealt with it like real troopers.
Fast forward to 2002, the University of Law became the first to offer an online distance learning program, aptly named 'very' distance learning! Imagine, sitting in your pyjamas in Mumbai or Chennai, sipping Masala chai and learning about British law online. Really 'very' wouldn't you say?
However, the ride wasn't hiccup-free for our strong tea enthusiasts. In 2012, controversy knocked at its prestigious doors. It was the year they got taken over by private equity firm Montagu. Folks weren't thrilled about it, much like a cricket match interrupted by rains! Rumours flared, tempers frayed, but like good old English weather, the storm passed, and the sun shone again.
Today, the University of Law proudly stands as an esteemed global gateway, teaching the Indian mind the art of the British legal system. With 10 campuses across UK, more than a lakh of students from around the globe and especially thousands from India, it continues to uphold the vision its founders, that animated group of tea sippers, first dreamt of on a chilly evening in 1962.
So here it is, a tale of an institution that rose from a quaint English town, weathered many storms, and became a beacon of light for aspiring legal minds from across the globe, including our very own India. Remember, it's one thing to study law, but it's a whole different ball game to study law at the University of Law! Are you game?
