Come gather ‘round folks, it’s time to spin a yarn about a place of knowledge and wisdom, a place we lovingly call Swansea University. It was the dawn of the 20th century, 1920 to be precise, a group of visionaries thought, “Why not set a beacon of education in the heart of Wales?” And so, they did! A voyage that started with 89 students and 12 professors in the early days can now boast a whopping 20,000 eager minds seeking enlightenment.
Chalk and board beginnings soon gave way to advancements. 1960 marked a twist in our tale – Abracadabra! - we had a spankin’ new science campus. Around this time, Mr. Nobellini – oops, I mean the Nobel Laureate Sir Kingsley William Amis - scribbled his thoughts within its hallowed walls. Imagine that!
Every great mission has a hiccup, none escape it, not even us. We had our share of trouble when in 1971, our students decided to take a little adventure of their own. The “Great Squat” it was called, a protest, to claim what was rightfully theirs! But quick to bounce back, we were, and we settled down to nurturing bright minds who’d bring, as they say, ‘much ado about something’ to the world.
Roll the years to 2007, when a radical notion was mooted to merge with another university. Oh, the suspense was straight out of a Bollywood movie! Who’d refuse a good masala mix? But destiny, my friends, had other plans. Our liaison wasn't meant to be, leaving us single and not quite ready to mingle.
Fast forward to 2015, they say change is good and boy, didn't we embrace it! Like a magnificent phoenix, we conceived the grande Bay Campus, spread across 65 opulent acres by the beach. Close your eyes, picture this – splendid ocean views, winter morning strolls, a place not just to learn but to experience life in its vibrant hues, enticing isn't it!
The tale of Swansea University is one of grit and constant evolution. Started by the visionaries, fueled by the learners, it has matured into a hub of diverse minds from every nook and corner of the world. And with all the stories it has to tell, this place is more than just an institution, it's ‘THE’ institution for those craving a slice of rich history and knowledge.
So there you have it folks, the saga of Swansea University - rise and shine, trials and triumphs. Sure as eggs is eggs, it's come a long way! Whether you're a student dreaming of foreign shores, or a parent watching those dreams unfold, this is a place where futures are forged, ideas are born, and destinies are shaped. Now, wouldn't you want to be a part of this delightful journey? As they say, the world's your oyster, so take the plunge! JOY! Feels like an IKIGAI!
