Think of a humble strawberry cottage, perched by the beautiful River Thames. Back in 1747, Horace Walpole, son of politician Robert Walpole, swoops in and falls in love with it. Fast forward and Walpole has not only bought the house but added acres and acres to it - about 35 to be exact. But, the eccentricity doesn't stop here! Walpole defies the trendy classical architecture of the 18th century and instead borrows heavily from the medieval period. This led to the creation of an intriguing mix of styles, hilariously dubbed "Strawberry Hill Gothic."
After years of glory, the 20th century triggered the downfall of the once cherished Strawberry Hill House. A severe lack of funds and attention brought it on the brink of ruin. Stepping up to salvage this historic beauty, the Strawberry Hill Trust was founded in 2002. The journey was not easy. Initial funding fell short and the total restoration cost was a staggering £8.2M. With joint efforts, the shortfall was met in 2007 and restoration began in 2008. Two years later, the fruit of their labor was showcased to the public.
Close by, you'll spot an intriguing figure standing tall in the midst of the greens. Meet the Grade I listed Chapel in the Wood, a garden marvel designed back in 1772 and completed in 1774. It might look a little out of place, but it is remembered by historians as a unique vestige of Walpole's eccentricity.
Planting its roots in 1850, St Mary’s started as a humble endeavor by Cardinal Wiseman, providing primary education to children from poor Catholic families. The foundation was laid at Brook Green House, Hammersmith, as a training college for Catholic Schoolmasters. Fast forward to 1855, and the college had opened its doors to lay students, branching away from its initial intention of becoming a religious order.
By the turn of the 20th century, St Mary’s shifted gears and expanded their vision. They flourished under the leadership of the fourth principal, Father William Byrne CM, and introduced a plethora of additions to the college, reflecting the evolving educational requirements of the time.
Miles away from its humble start, St Mary’s moved to its presently known location, the iconic Strawberry Hill in 1925. The college collaborated with University College London (UCL) in implementing a string of degree offerings over the years. The university wave swept St Mary’s as it began issuing college-specific degrees in 2006, followed by gaining full university title in 2014.
Over the years, St Mary’s has embraced international friendships with a global network of educational institutions. It was indeed a historic moment for St Mary's, as they formed a partnership with The University of Notre Dame Australia in 2020.
And of course, who can forget that exciting day on 17th September 2010 when Pope Benedict XVI visited St Mary's? The inspiring day will forever stand as a grand highlight in the university's story.
Stepping into the world of sports, St Mary’s has produced a dazzling line-up of athletes who represented at the 2012 Summer Olympics, delivering an awe-inspiring performance! There's more! The campus hosted pre-game training camps for South African, Irish, Chinese, and Japanese teams, making it a vibrant international hub.
Today, St Mary's stands tall, embracing education, culture, and sports like no other. With ongoing partnerships with prestigious institutions and an ever-growing global presence, St Mary's indeed is a unique blend of history, dedication and ambition!
