Once upon a time, way back in 1858, there was this bloke named Mr. Vernon who thought, "Hey, why not lay the foundation stone of this college in Walsall?" And voilà, Walsall College was born! It was an absolute riot back then, folks from all around used to flock here to learn art and design.
Fast forward a bit to 1925, a guy with a twinkle, J.G. Jenkins, becomes the Principal. Under his leadership, the college spreads its wings further, introducing new-fangled courses on science and commerce. No rocket science here! Just plain ol' academics made fun and enjoyable.
Now let's hop, skip, and jump to 1953. Mr. Jenkins, bless his cotton socks, had retired by then, and David L. Taylor steps into his big shoes. He says to himself, "This place needs a jolly good sprucing up!" And, boy did he spruce! He builds a spanking new campus at St Paul's Street.
It was a great time till 1971, then entering from stage left, we got this chap, R. Orme, becoming the Principal. He introduces more new courses. Talk about a smarty-pants! He was always throwing in groundbreaking stuff like Business and Hotel Management. Imagine learning to run a five-star hotel while sitting in Walsall, brilliant aye?
By 1998, it was a whole new world. Drum roll, please, for Amarjit Basi, our first Indian Principal! Told you, folks, we got history here. He brings in this cool thing called Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It’s like learning but on your computer! Clever, ain't it?
Fast forward again to 2009, we got this new campus in Littleton Street West. You wouldn't believe the transformation – it's like a phoenix rising from the ashes. It's got everything - swanky classrooms, state-of-the-art workshops, high-tech labs, the works!
We are all in the good ship now with this lad, Mr. Jev Bhalla, at the helm since 2016. He's got this vision, you see, wants to make the college an international education hub. Grand plan, ain’t it? And why not? After all, we are not just any college; we are Walsall College!
Rolling into 2021, here we are, more than a century and a half old, and going strong as ever. We've got more than 15,000 students learning in our hallways (and on their screens, thanks to Mr. Basi’s VLE thingy). Just a bit of trivia here - we've got students hailing from more than 80 countries. Now, that’s a melange, wouldn’t you say?
So that's our story, cricket fans. Ups and downs, trials and triumphs, laughter and tears. It’s been a mad ride. And heres the catcher, you could be a part of this great legacy. So get ready to pack your bags, folks! Potential is something that's always brewing at Walsall College, and we've got a seat waiting for ya!
