Established in 2002, West Coast College is a progressive and dynamic educational institution, which came to life through the merging of multiple institutions that had been imparting quality education since 1999. Situated in the Western Cape, this college holds the distinction of being the last college to have been formed in the region. Within three years of welcoming its first batch of students in 2005, it became a popular choice amongst aspiring learners, far exceeding its initial student intake expectations by 2007 and, therefore, having to expand its operations significantly. The founding tenets of the college include equality, transparency, honesty, competence, and social responsibility, offering a learning environment that nurtures not just academic growth but also moral and ethical development.
From a student's perspective, the supportive community at West Coast College is undoubtedly a key advantage. The college presents a robust student support unit that plays a crucial role in enhancing each student's experience while navigating the academic journey. This unit provides holistic support, assisting students throughout their academic tenure, starting from the admission process, providing guidance during the course of their studies, and extending help even after their graduation. The assistance is consistent across all five campuses of the college, thanks to the dedicated support officers working tirelessly to address the needs of the students. Hence, it's only fair to conclude that the comprehensive approach of support at West Coast College makes the academic voyage relatively smooth and worthwhile for all of its students.

Once upon a time, in the year 1874, Watford Library and School of Science and Art commenced its journey on Queens Road, located in the thriving town of Watford. A rather intriguing duo Henry Vaughan Lanchester and Thomas Arthur Lodge, two men known for their inventive designs, drafted the blueprints for a magnificent building on Hempstead Road in 1938. Decorated with Art Deco style, this structure would eventually be known as the famous Lanchester Building.
Interestingly, the college's location had a historical significance too, being on the old grounds of the Cassiobury Estate, property previously owned by the Earl of Essex. Even though the magnificent manor was pulled down in 1927, a small 17th century residential building, Little Cassiobury, nevertheless, kept its foothold.
However, as fate would interfere, the World War II broke out, halting construction work on the Lanchester Building. Work remained unfinished during the turbulent 1940s. Years passed and in 1947 Watford Technical College came into existence but it wasn't until 1953 that it opened its doors in the newly constructed premises.
Fast forward to the 1980s, the amalgamation of Watford College of Technology and George Stephenson College (which was established in 1965/1966) led to the formation of Watford College. The year 1991 marked a significant milestone as it saw the restructuring of Further Education in Hertfordshire and the inception of the West Herts College. Birthed from two local colleges, Watford College and Cassio College, plus an offshoot in Hemel Hempstead, Dacorum College, this establishment aimed to offer inclusive, quality education.
As we entered the 21st century, the Watford Campus underwent a transformation with the construction of a new building. With a bittersweet farewell to the iconic Lanchester Building, the West Herts College started its new journey in the modern edifice. Although, the architectural beauty of the Lanchester Building would soon find itself repurposed into a primary school.
Success came knocking in 2017 when the College was bestowed with a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The same year news of a merger with Stanmore College buzzed around yet had to be pulled back within three months.
Leadership at the helm ranged from Elizabeth Rushton (2004-2011), Tony Pitcher (2003-2004), Andrew Bragg (1997-2003), to former Watford College principals Terry Howard (? - 1986), Frank Baker (1986 - 1996), John Loveridge (1996 - 1997). As you see, the tale of West Herts College is intertwined with a rich history, prominent architectural developments, and a brilliant lineage of leaders. All these elements collectively have enriched the journey of this revered institution.
