The year 1857 witnessed his proposition of a first-of-its-kind mining college in Wigan. He presented his visionary thought before the trustees of the prevailing Wigan Blue Coat National School. Soon after, the same year saw the inception of the Wigan Mining and Technical College. When the college opened its doors on 2 August 1858, a pool of 50 enthusiastic students devoted themselves to mastering the disciplines of mining, geology, and chemistry.
In under two decades, the college's size rose significantly, accommodating 130 ambitious students by 1875. At that time, the college was yet to figure out a permanent abode, alternating between various local venues including the Town Hall, the Conservative Club, and Wigan Grammar School. That changed in 1882 when the institution finally had its dedicated building.
As we rolled into the 20th century, it had emerged as one of the leading mining colleges within the nation. 1903 marked yet another milestone for the ever-growing college as it unlocked doors of its grand campus, constructed from a whopping £50,000 investment.
