History University of Wolverhampton

The humble beginnings of the University of Wolverhampton go back to the year 1827, when the Wolverhampton Tradesmen's and Mechanics' Institute was established. A forerunner in educating the masses, it complemented the Wolverhampton Free Library's evolving evening courses in everything from scientific and technical subjects to commerce, starting from the 1870s.

By 1926, these structures paved the way for the formation of the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College. In 1931, a shining chapter in the college's history began with Prince George laying its foundation stone. The post-war era brought a transformative catalyst - the Music Department. It was born in 1945, catering to a surge in demand for learning new areas. Fast forward to 1950, the inspectors from HM gave a commendable statement, saying it was "unique among technical colleges" – an admirable accolade by any standard.

The 1950s had another significant milestone with the arrival of the first computers in 1957, the WITCH (Wolverhampton Instrument for Teaching Computing from Harwell). This milestone has a record of its own, as it is now considered the "world's oldest original functioning electronic stored program computer". An exciting piece of trivia here - it was restored and exhibited in The National Museum of Computing, Bletchley Park after 2009.

As the 60s bloomed, so did our burgeoning college by offering BA degrees in multiple subjects like English, Geography, History, Music, and Economics from 1964. Another monumental event was the unification of the Wolverhampton College of Technology and the Wolverhampton College of Art. It led to the birth of The Polytechnic, Wolverhampton in 1969, a new chapter of erudition and expansion.

The next decades saw relentless progress. We expanded into various domains like the arts and design, education, nursing, midwifery, and even established a virtual learning environment, WOLF (Wolverhampton Online Learning Framework). Into the new millennium, massive transformation was underway with a hefty investment of £115 million from 2000 to 2010 on campus developments. By the end of 2010, we were well on course with our quest for growth and innovation.

Our constant endeavour toward broadening our horizons resulted in our biggest ever investment plan in 2015, 'Our Vision, Your Opportunity', aiming at a whopping £250 million of investment by 2020. This was dedicated to evolving the student experience and driving regional economic growth by opening new establishments for science, engineering and business studies. That very year, we received our largest donation - an astronomical £1m from Lord Paul, the chancellor.

In 2018, we welcomed an unprecedented partnership with the West Midlands Ambulance Service to form the UK's first University Ambulance Trust. Today, as we look back at our journey, the University of Wolverhampton stands strong and proud. From a small institute to a colossus in education, we have been a part of creating knowledge, intellect and guided thousands in unleashing their potential to the world.
