A couple of years down the line new spell fell upon our epic tale, it was 1912 and our hero-at-heart transformed into the "East Anglian Institute of Agriculture." Now here's a twist! Just as William Shakespeare said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet," our beloved institution proved this right. As 1939 rolled in, another name change! This time it became the "Essex Institute of Agriculture, Writtle."
But hold on, the journey wasn't over yet!
In the stormy year of 1940, our Institute relocated to the enchanting Writtle Estate. Some of you might be thinking, "Why the move?" Seems like, fate had another plan for the Institute, a new chapter was about to be inked. This brings us to 1914, the unsettling year when the world was on fire.
The First World War broke out and teaching came to a standstill at our hallowed halls. Clive Beale and Geoff Owen in their masterpiece work, 'Writtle College, The First Hundred Years' shed light on this intriguing chapter. They reveal how staff shifted gears, some joining the armed forces others bonding with the War Agricultural Committee which oversees the institute.
World War 2! It w-, was a time of peril. But did the spirit of Writtle falter? No! They rose, they shone and they guided. In a valiant effort for the 'Dig For Victory Campaign' the Institute was a beacon of knowledge, providing wisdom on crop production, gardening, plant protection and livestock.
Whoo! What a journey, right? When the time was tumultuous, the Loyal Women's Land Army in Essex, found solace, training and sewing the seeds of victory in Writtle's grounds with their short three-week courses.
As the whirlwind of the world calmed down, in 1969, the institution claimed a new name: Writtle Agricultural College. Follow that magnificent transformation in 1989 when it was named Writtle College.
Finally, as we step into the 21st century, in 2016, our long-standing hero embraced its final and most majestic identity - Writtle University College.
So, there you have it, the tale of an extraordinary Institute, rich in history, rooted in values and committed to nurturing the future. Now, as the torchbearers of tomorrow, are you ready to add your chapter to our saga?
