History University of York

Let's embark on a journey through time to discover the captivating story of the University of York. Can you believe the idea for this prestigious institution was first presented to James I in 1617? Indeed, this seed was sown hundreds of years before the university came into existence. Fast forward to 1641, the second petition was ready but, alas, the English Civil War of 1642 intervened. A third attempt in 1647 didn’t fare much better, getting a firm 'no' from Parliament.

Fast forward to the 1820s, there was chatter about establishing a university in York, but it fell through because Durham University sprung to life in 1832. However, the dream didn't die. Years later, in 1903, F. J. Munby and the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, among others, proposed a 'Victoria University of Yorkshire'.

Oliver Sheldon, a key player from Rowntree's and a co-founder of York Civic Trust, dedicated himself to keeping the campaign alive. But the credit for successfully establishing the university goes to John Bowes Morrell. In the year of Morrell's death, 1963, the university threw open its doors to its first batch of students - 216 undergraduates, 14 postgraduates, and 28 vibrant academic and administrative staff.

From the beginning, the university stayed true to its academic roots, starting with six departments: Economics, Education, English, History, Mathematics, Politics. They might not have had the grandeur of the current campus, but they certainly had character. The students initially studied at the historic King's Manor in the city centre and Heslington Hall, a structure with Tudor foundations.

The year 1964 began with a bang! Work commenced to build custom-made structures at Heslington Campus, now the heart of the university. Baron James of Rusholme, the university's first Vice-Chancellor, had clear ambitions. He wanted the university to have a collegiate character, to limit the number of subjects, and emphasised the importance of tutorials and seminars. His ideas, inspired by Graeme Moodie, the founding head of the Politics Department resulted in students becoming an integral part of the university's governance, a model that has been widely adopted.

By 1965, the university introduced its first two residential colleges, Derwent and Langwith, along with the University of York Library. Alcuin and Vanbrugh followed swiftly in 1967, and Goodricke came into existence in 1968. The journey of residential colleges culminated with Wentworth College in 1972, marking an end to the creation of colleges for a considerable timeframe.

The early adopters of creative teaching styles, the university had an inventive approach to education. Imagine studying a joint honours degree that encompasses subjects as diverse as history and biology! The five-year social science degree was also a bold and innovative concept back in the day.

After a dormancy of about two decades, the university saw the birth of James College in 1990. Initially intended for postgraduates, it soon opened its doors to undergraduates due to the university's rapid expansion. From a strength of 4,300, the student population nearly doubled to 8,500 by 1993.

The dawn of the new millennium brought with it the creation of Halifax Court, a new set of accommodations, which eventually rechristened itself as Halifax College in 2002. Around the same time, ambitious plans were hatched to create a campus for an additional 5,000 students and introduce subjects like law and dentistry.

Nevertheless, it wasn't all smooth sailing. Due to planning restrictions, the university's expansion aspirations took a hit. The solution? A 117-hectare extension, initially called Heslington East, intended to mirror the existing Heslington West campus. Today, these are lovingly referred to as Campus East and Campus West.

After following an extensive consultation process and a public inquiry, the green light came in May 2007. Finally, in 2008, construction began. The inaugural building, Goodricke college, opened its doors in October 2009. The subsequent relocation of existing colleges and the establishment of new ones, like Constantine College in 2014, injected fresh energy into the student community.

By December 2019, plans were set to build two new colleges on Campus East, offering around 1,400 new student bedrooms and social spaces. They committed to respecting and enhancing the area's ecological diversity, a testament to their commitment to sustainability.

So, that’s a snapshot of the history of the University of York – a journey of resilience, determination, and innovation. A tale of a dream that took centuries to realise but ultimately emerged as a beacon of academic excellence.
