Picture this; the year is 1920 and Monsignor Joseph A. Delaney, a prominent figure in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, nurtures a vision. He conceives an idea of an educational institution, and to bring his idea to fruition, he connects with Sister Blanche Rooney, a devotee of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet, based in Troy, New York. With excitement, they plant the seeds of a new venture in Albany, New York. Guess what? The College of Saint Rose blossoms, marking a new era in women's education on June 28, 1920.
Rooney, Delaney, and Bishop Edmund F. Gibbons, with their collective effort, acquire the William Keeler estate at 979 Madison Avenue, setting up their abode of knowledge. The institution is christened "The College of Saint Rose", honouring Saint Rose of Lima - the first canonized saint from the Americas. From the very beginning, the founders prioritize professional teacher training, but they soon widen their wings to engulf business and other professions.
Fast forward to 1946, post the World War II era, the college inaugurates an evening division exclusively for war veterans. By 1950, the college raises the academic bar by introducing a graduate school. Here's an exciting twist, men folk are allowed into evening and graduate divisions, gradually leading to the College of Saint Rose turning completely coeducational by 1969.
Soren Kierkegaard rightly said, "Life can only be understood backward, but it must be lived forwards." Unfolding a new chapter in their journey, 10 laypersons are added to the board of trustees in 1970, and the college becomes an independent institution, still sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet. As we move forward, 1974 marks a milestone in college history as male students are provided campus housing and the evening division is resurrected.
Alas, change is the only constant in life, and in December 2015, the college decides to eliminate 27 academic programs and 23 faculty positions, citing the institution's future viability. In February 2016, college president Carolyn J. Stefanco faced a "no confidence" motion from the faculty. She was blamed for the violation of shared governance and tenure rights, and despite the controversy, held her office till 2020.
By the end of 2020, the college undergoes an administrative budget cut worth $8 million. Adding to the series of eliminations and cuts, 16 bachelor's, six master's, and three certificate programs mark their end as a part of cost-cutting. The goal was to achieve a balanced budget by 2023.
Despite all adversities, a ray of hope prevails in December 2021, when four professors, terminated due to the 2020 downsizing, bring a victorious lawsuit against the college. A New York state court reinstates them, stating that the college was not following their faculty handbook guidelines. However, the storm wasn't over yet. In October 2022, the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court's Third Department overturns this decision.
Life takes a U-turn for the college when in June 2023, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education hints at jeopardizing the college's accreditation owing to fiscal issues. By October, Fitch Ratings describes the school's bond rating as "BB", indicating a non-investment grade speculative. November was even more challenging as the college had to approach lawmakers for emergency funding to avert closure. A dreadful moment indeed!
On a gloomy day of November 30, 2023, came the unfortunate news - due to persistent financial troubles, the board of trustees decides to dissolve the once thriving College of Saint Rose post the Spring 2024 term. President White cites declining enrollment, the aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and other challenging factors affecting numerous small independent institutions in the Northeastern United States as the prime reasons for this drastic decision. The ramifications of this closure leave 600 employees jobless and 87 properties in Albany unoccupied. As the curtain draws on this splendid institution, students protest the planned closure. A bitter end indeed to a rich journey that started with a noble vision!
