History SUNY - University at Albany

Born in 1844, the University at Albany sprung from humble beginnings. From its inception as the New York State Normal School, to becoming the first New York State-chartered institution of higher education, it has been a beacon of knowledge and learning. With a mere 29 students and four faculty members at its start, the scholarly institution found its home in an abandoned railroad depot smack in the centre of the city. Training New York students to become teachers and administrators was the institution's original mission.

Moving forward with the times, by the 1890s, the "School" evolved into the New York State Normal College at Albany. Upon the introduction of a revised four-year curriculum in 1905, it metamorphosed again to become the first public institution in New York empowered with the right to award bachelor's degrees.

In 1909, a new chapter began with the construction of a fresh campus, what we now know as UAlbany's Downtown Campus. Between Washington and Western avenues it stood, proud on a 4.5-acre site. By 1913, this burgeoning educational sanctuary had grown to encompass 590 students and 44 faculty members. It earned a new name—the New York State College for Teachers at Albany—and gained the authority to award a master's degree for the first time. Its student population swelled to 1,424 by 1932, mirroring the institution's ever-evolving curriculum.

As the years rolled on, the college held steadfast to its primary focus—training teachers—but it also developed a curriculum akin to that of a four-year liberal arts college. However, when the State University of New York system unfurled itself in 1948, the College for Teachers, along with other teacher-training schools, served as its foundation.

It was Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller's vision that fueled the establishment of the SUNY system in the post-World War II era, to keep more pace with the swelling numbers of college-bound students. Massive construction initiatives were undertaken, culminating in over 50 new campuses sprinkling across New York.

As its mandate widened, the College for Teachers evolved again. It became known as SUNY College of Education at Albany in 1959, then transfigured yet again in 1961, morphing into a four-year liberal arts college christened the State University College at Albany. In 1962, the university began granting doctoral degrees academic honour that soon saw the institution flaunting its own Uptown Campus, ushered in by Rockefeller himself. Student and faculty numbers expanded, reaching to 13,200 and 746 respectively by 1970.

The school's evolution didn't stop there. Alongside the emergence of the School of Public Health in 1985, came the addition of the New York State Writers Institute in 1983. Over the years, this institution boasted an esteemed guest list, with a lineup of Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, nearly 200 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners, and even Oscar winners and nominees.

With the dawn of the 21st century came the birth of UAlbany’s NanoTech complex in 2006. Home to the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, the complex eventually merged with the State University of New York Institute of Technology to become a separate entity, the SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

The university experienced a further expansion in 1996 with the establishment of a Health Sciences Campus, 12 miles east of the Uptown Campus. This new site, home to the Gen*NY*Sis Center for Excellence in Cancer Genomics, utilized the former Sterling-Winthrop laboratories, transforming them into labs, classrooms, and a business incubator focusing on biotechnology and health-related disciplines.

Fast-forward to the present, the university at Albany stands as a symbol of extensive knowledge and progressive education. However, the institution has been battling declining enrollment, retention, and graduation rates which led to a fiscal deficit for the year 2022-2023. Despite these challenges, the University at Albany still echoes its legacy - a beacon of knowledge and learning.
