History University of New Mexico

To trace the roots of the University of New Mexico, we need to travel over 130 years back in time. The date was February 28, 1889, a significant day when the seeds of this institution were planted with the passing of House Bill No. 186. The backdrop was the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico, and this bill was more than regulation; it ensured the rise of a beacon of education.

This monumental event was largely due to the influence of Bernard Shandon Rodey, a territorial judge with an unshakeable faith in Albuquerque's potential as the ideal spot for the university. His unwavering advocacy earned him a rightful place in history as the "Father of the University".

Under the able leadership of Elias S. Stover, the university's first president, the first building, Hodgin Hall, proudly opened its doors two years later. The guiding light of the university then passed to William G. Tight, the third president. His tenure from 1901 to 1909 saw the institution growing in leaps and bounds, with the introduction of dynamic programs for students and faculty, and embracing unique Pueblo Revival architecture style, an ethos that still makes the campus stand out.

Next, under David Ross Boyd, the campus saw significant expansion, developing into a 200,000-acre (810 km2) federal land grant. Further recognition arrived in 1922 when the prestigious North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredited the university. The steady and strategic growth continued with the appointment of James F. Zimmerman, the seventh president, overseeing exponential expansion in student enrollment, introduction of new departments, and the strengthening of the university's scientific research portfolio.

The World War II era saw the university take an active part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program, establishing itself as an institution committed to serving the nation. Under the innovative leadership of its eighth president, John Philip Wernette, the university further improved its faculty, programs, and services, and launched the Law School and School of Business Administration.

In the hands of its first native New Mexican president, Thomas L. Popejoy, the university experienced explosive growth. His two-decade reign saw a rise in enrollment from 5,000 to over 14,000, the establishment of programs in medicine, nursing, dental, and law, and the construction of numerous new facilities.

The early 1970s were marked by student activism, with two sit-in protests demanding immediate attention from the authorities. Despite challenges, the university continued to expand its offerings and improve its facilities. However, the decade ended on a low note with the university caught up in a recruitment scandal, dubbed 'Lobogate'.

Despite this drawback, the university bounced back stronger in the subsequent decades, with impressive expansions to the medical center, business school, and engineering school, along with the establishment of an Honors College. Notably, UNM stood out with one of the largest student and faculty populations of Hispanics and Native Americans in the country.

Since the turn of the century, UNM has continued to progress, enhancing medical facilities, renovating existing buildings, and opening a branch campus in Rio Rancho. In 2016, UNM made history by becoming the first US university to launch a Signature School Program with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Moving ahead in its relentless pursuit of excellence, UNM turned smoke and tobacco-free in 2017. Today, the University of New Mexico sparkles as a jewel in the crown of New Mexico's burgeoning bioscience sector, having launched nearly 80 startups since 2013. Truly, this historical journey of UNM is a tale of sustained progress, demonstrating the power of perseverance, learning, innovation, and growth.
