History Grand Valley State University

In the late 1950s, a need grew evident for a full-fledged college in Michigan's second largest metropolitan region, the Grand Rapids area. This necessity was embossed in innumerable survey reports, leading to the spark of an idea in the mind of local businessman, Bill Seidman. Seidman took it upon him to create a committee in 1958, tirelessly studying these reports, and began to strategize the creation of a higher educational institution.

By the subsequent year, these efforts began to yield results. The Michigan Legislature officially established the long-awaited college and an interesting naming contest was proposed. Out of 2500 creative entries, the name "Grand Valley State College" was chosen as the crown jewel, perfectly reflecting the inspirational idea behind the institution.

The generous 1960s sealed the success of the college by raising enough funds for its establishment. Around 5,000 localites, private organizations, and business authorities throughout West Michigan pooled their resources, amassing an impressive $350,000 for buying land, and an additional $1,000,000 for the institution's construction.

By 1961, the Grand Valley State College Board of Control had enough finances to begin construction at a stunning 876-acre site in Ottawa County near the serene Grand River. The first student, Diane (Hatch) Paton, walked through these freshly-constructed educational edifices in 1963. Paton, along with other 224 students formed the first batch of Grand Valley State College and by June 18, 1967, the university proudly celebrated their graduation.

Towards the end of the 1960s, the college expanded with several new academic buildings, including the Zumberge Library, named as a tribute to the university's inaugural president, James Zumberge. However, the institution wasn't without its share of controversies. In 1969, the Grand Valley Lanthorn, the college's newspaper, was temporarily shut down after being charged with printing vulgarities. Interestingly, this incident served as a litmus test for freedom of speech, and the case was finally settled out of court, siding with the college.

During the revolutionary 70's, the college had grown exponentially, setting up a plethora of specialized academic units. The institution's name also went through a series of changes. It was renamed to Grand Valley State Colleges by Michigan Governor William Milliken in 1973 and later trimmed down to Grand Valley State College in 1983, aligning with the reorganization of academic programs into divisions.

Fast forward to 1987, another major turning point revealed itself when the Michigan Legislature passed a law to rename the college to Grand Valley State University. The 80's and 90's laid the foundation stones for several satellite campuses in downtown Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland, and Traverse City.

The institution took a leap of faith in 2004, reorganizing its university structure into a robust college system. The system comprised of multiple colleges like College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Interdisciplinary Studies, College of Community and Public Service, and many more.

Entering the golden jubilee year, the university embarked upon a successful campaign that attracted about $100 million from over 17,000 gracious donors, funding several construction projects including the Mary Idema Pew Library and the L. William Seidman Center.

In the recent past, around 2012 and 2013, GVSU made headlines again with an expansion plan including a new biology laboratory and additions to the Zumberge Library on the Allendale campus. Today, the Grand Valley State University stands tall, etching a rich legacy in the sands of time, ready to build a bright future for its students.
