A collective of Michigan Presbyterians gather together with a vision, nurturing an idea and a mission to aspire for higher education. It was here and then that the seeds for what we now know as Alma College were sown.
Imagine receiving financial aid from a luminary who made his fortunes from lumber industries. Ammi W. Wright was that very person, his largesse played a pivotal role in setting the bedrock of Alma College. In his honour, Wright Hall on the Alma campus and the Wright Avenue in the city of Alma are named after him. He's not just a name, but a legacy etched in the heart and soul of Alma College.
Interestingly, besides our college, there are particular sites of educational significance that embrace great historic value. Both the site of college's Old Main and Folsom Hall are designated as Michigan Historic Sites. As you walk by, it's hard to ignore the past whispering through the facades of these heritage buildings.
Here's a fun fact for you. You may not believe it but Alma's initial mascot was the Fighting Presbyterians. Sounds a bit formal, doesn't it? But apparently, it did, even back in 1931. It kicked up a storm of debate in 'The Almanian', our student-run newspaper.
World War II was a tumultuous period globally. Despite the challenges, Alma College was among an exclusive group of 131 colleges and universities in the country that participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. This initiative set the path for students to achieve a Navy commission.
In June 2010, a new chapter unfolded at Alma College with Dr Jeff Abernathy assuming the mantle of the 13th President. His leadership continues to strengthen and encompass the core values of our institution.
1931 saw another pivotal development. A contest to decide a new nickname did away with the formality of 'Fighting Presbyterians' and chose 'the Scots' instead, tipping a hat to the Presbyterian Church's Scottish roots.
