In the heartland of Texas, in the 1960s, was birthed a vision to better healthcare education and services. This vision led to the establishment of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, the all heart, Texans way! The foundations of which were laid in Lubbock, by the visionaries, Ed Whitacre Jr., Kent Hance, and Dr. M. Roy Wilson, who believed in making world-class medical education accessible to all.
Inch by inch, brick by brick, the year 1969 saw the first milestones begin to take shape with the opening of the School of Medicine. Sparkling new and eager, the school welcomed its first batch of ambitious medical students in 1972, a moment that brought so much joy the Texas sun might've felt a little threatened!
The journey of growth continued, with the establishment of the School of Nursing in 1979. The following year the School of Health Professions joined in, forming a power-trio that set out to conquer the health education sector. And boy, did they do a good job!
As the 1980s rolled in, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center welcomed a new kid on the block, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. A mouthful of a name, huh? But wait, a couple of years later in 1993, the School of Allied Health Sciences, for long stint, underwent a name change, and guess what it morphed into? Away with the 'cloak of elegance', it now went by the tongue-twister, the School of Health Professions. Cue the confetti!
But the most exceptional touch is still the realization of a global vision. Thousands of miles away, this Texas gem has been teaching medical students in foreign lands like India since 1999. Yes! You've heard it right, my dear mates from the Indian subcontinent. TTUHSC and India go long back, so long back that Jame Bond would feel juvenile.
The saga of achievements didn't cease yet. 2007 saw the university expand its boundaries. A new campus got established over a whooping 20-acre land in El Paso. Now, I know what you’re thinking. What happened to the existing campus at Lubbock? Don't you worry your little head! Lubbock continued to be the main campus, while El Paso got greeted as the kid brother.
By 2010, the efforts and the continuous strive for excellence bore fruit in the form of recognition. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center got accredited by SACSCOC, a governing body that symbolizes credibility and quality of education. And you know what they say, approval from SACSCOC is — yup, you guessed it — a matching set of the Academy Awards and the Grammys!
Not wanting to rest on the laurels, TTUHSC decided to expand its umbrella, opening a new school, the one they called School of Public Health in 2014. A baby in comparison, but a trailblazer in its own right, this new kid went on to create a niche for itself.
In a nutshell, or shall we say, in a cowboy's hat, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's impressive lineage, and the grit of its founders is a story of dreams, aspirations, resilience, and good ol’ hard Texan work. Its doors fling wide open for any Indian student keen on kitted themselves out for a career in health sciences!
