History Iowa State University

Back in 1856, a ground-breaking decision was adopted by the Iowa General Assembly. Their revolutionary idea? The establishment of the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, planting the seeds of what we know today as Iowa State University. History marked the official birth of this institution on March 22, 1858; it then laid its roots in Story County after trumping proposals from Johnson, Kossuth, Marshall, and Polk counties. The land that was to nurture the minds of thousands of students, spanning over 648 acres, was obtained for just $5,379.

Iowa prides itself on being the first state to champion the provisions of Morrill Act in 1862. This was a specific act that propelled the promotion of tertiary education in U.S., and led to Iowa State standing tall as a land-grant college. Open-ended debates exist amongst Kansas State University, Michigan State University, and the Pennsylvania State University, each laying claim to being the first land-grant institution in the United States.

Iowa State University's progression story revolves around the core belief that higher education should not be reserved for a select few; instead, should be accessible for all. They also believed in imparting both liberal and practical subjects. This approach was embraced right from the beginning, demonstrating how interconnected these principals were to the foundation of land-grant university.

A class of determined students, both men and women, were admitted in 1868. Yes, this institution welcomed women for higher education even in the 19th century. In 1872, a small but focused batch of 24 men and two resilient women were recognized as the first graduating class.

This institution is home to one of the earliest establishments, the "Farm House." This structure, completed in 1861, predates the influx of students and classrooms. The Farm House initially served as the residence for the superintendent of the Model Farm and eventually housed the deans of Agriculture. Adonijah Welch, Iowa State's first president, even resided here for a short term, drafting his inaugural speech within the confines of a second-floor bedroom.

One of the university's distinguishing features was the Iowa Experiment Station. The curriculum extended beyond theoretical instruction, offering practical courses pivotal to shaping a student's career as a farmer. Beyond this, they also offered studies in mechanical, civil, electrical, and mining engineering.

Iowa State’s President Welch and Professor I.P. Roberts, conducted off-site three-day farmers' institutes as early as 1870, marking the maiden off-campus event held by a land grant institution. Not stopping at this, they introduced courses in domestic economy in 1872, again claiming the title as the first land grant university to offer domestic economy training for college credit.

Circling back to 1879, witness the birth of the State of Veterinary Science, the first state veterinary college in the United States, and the initial offering as a two-year program leading to a diploma. The veterinary program didn't shy away from extensive scientific education, covering zoology, botany, anatomy of domestic animals, veterinary obstetrics, and sanitary science.

Fast forward to 1891, William M. Beardshear was appointed as Iowa State's President. Iowa Agricultural College significantly bloomed under the curative vision of Beardshear, with the growth manifesting in various ways, such as the development of new agricultural programs and the addition of premier faculty members. The campus saw innovative expansion with the inauguration of Morrill Hall (1891), the Campanile (1899), Old Botany (now Carrie Chapman Catt Hall) (1892), and Margaret Hall (1895). Sadly, Margaret Hall succumbed to a fire in 1938, but the others stand proud to this day.

Now known as Beardshear Hall in honour of its former President Beardshear, the building serves as the administrative nerve center of the university. The progressive spirit of the university conferred the naming of Catt Hall after the university’s alumna and famed suffragette, Carrie Chapman Catt. The Hall is now home to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

A hundred years ago, 1912 saw the genesis of Iowa State's first Homecoming celebration during the annual football game against their rival University of Iowa. The year 1922 marked the commencement of VEISHEA, a student-run festival named by combining the initials of Iowa State's schools: Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Industrial Science, Home Economics, and Agriculture.

Fast forwarding to more recent times, Iowa State University today offers over 100 undergraduate majors and 200 fields of study leading to postgraduate and professional degrees. The academic programs at ISU are designed to provide a rounded education in the humanities, natural sciences, and technical fields which have directly led to remarkable research advances. The university now sits on a sprawling 2,000 acres campus and has grown remarkably since its evolution from an agricultural college to an internationally recognised institution.
