Can you imagine attending a college that sprouted from a revolutionary idea that dates way back to 1958? That's Hampshire College for you! The root for this modern structure of education came from the presidents of four renowned institutions: Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. They formed a committee on a mission, to reimagine liberal arts education, nurturing a distinct academic experience embracing individualism, lifelong learning, and multi-disciplinary approach.
How inspiring does the "New College Plan" sound? It was all about allowing you the freedom to design your study program, stirring your curiosity and preparing you to independently seek knowledge for a lifetime. The plan laid emphasis on nurturing your inquisitiveness, prompting learning across various disciplines, and maintaining close relationships with your teachers.
Here comes an exciting twist in the tale. In 1965, a generous alumnus of Amherst College named Harold F. Johnson was moved by the New College Plan's concept. Guess what he did next? He contributed a whopping $6 million to establish Hampshire College. His zest for supporting this innovative educational approach was matched by a grant from the Ford Foundation. The first trustees of Hampshire College utilised this generosity and converted an 800-acre farmland in South Amherst, Massachusetts into a thriving campus.
Isn't it interesting to know that the college's founding spirit is profoundly reflected in a book called "The Making of a College?" Franklin Patterson, the inaugural president of the college, and Chuck Longsworth, another founding pillar from Amherst College, co-authored this significant document in 1967. This book, although out of print, remains available digitally, nurturing the founding principles of Hampshire College.
Fast forward a bit to 1970 when the college opened its doors to the students. Thanks to the copious applications received, Hampshire College enjoyed the status of being an extremely selective undergraduate college. This popularity saw a decline after a few years, only to revive yet again in the late 1990s.
Despite its financial hurdles, primarily due to the absence of a founding endowment, Hampshire College continues to make strides in academics, largely due to the income from tuition fees. As of June 30, 2017, the endowment stood at $48.5 million. They have managed to gain some financial stability through fundraising efforts, though the endowment demand is still pressing.
The college then made unique strides by forming a "cultural village" in the mid-1990s, enabling independent non-profit organizations to set up their residences on the campus. Some distinguished names include the National Yiddish Book Center, the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, and The Hitchcock Center for the Environment.
Skipping ahead to 2004, the fourth president, Gregory Prince, declared his plans to retire after serving the longest tenure any Hampshire president had seen. Interestingly enough, his successor, Ralph Hexter, from the College of Letters and Science, University of California, Berkeley, was inaugurated as the next president on October 15, 2005. This appointment placed Hampshire College amongst a small number of educational institutions in the United States led by an openly gay president.
The college's journey unfolded with multiple presidents each contributing to innovative educational strategies and securing fund resources. A significant moment came in August 2012 when the college declared the setting up of a scholarship fund aimed to assist undocumented students secure their degrees.
However, the journey wasn't always smooth. In January 2019, the college announced its strategic plans to seek a partner for the college due to its financial instability and small endowment. This decision saw protests from both students and alumni, who demanded transparency and involvement in decision-making processes.
Despite facing turbulent times, the college prioritized remaining independent and turned towards fundraising measures. And, guess what? They even caught the interest of some iconic alumni, documentarian Ken Burns and Stonyfield Yogurt co-founder Gary Hirshberg, who contributed significantly to keep the college afloat.
In 2020, keeping up with its tradition of innovation, Hampshire College discarded the departmental structures and reshaped itself around challenging global issues such as climate change, white supremacy, and the peculiarities of life in a "post-truth" era.
Irrespective of the challenges, the spirit of Hampshire College celebrated its golden jubilee with gusto in the weekend of October 15–17, 2021. Though postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event ensured a grand welcome to nearly 900 guests alike to participate in the festivities.
When you glance at the history, it all seizes down to a potential revolution in education that started back in 1958 and continues to transform. From its humble inception, Hampshire College has been an epitome of a unique educational journey merging innovative learning methods with a steadfast commitment to addressing global challenges.
