In the winter wonderland of Alaska, in the late 1950s, Alaska Methodist University germinated on the foundation laid by Peter Gordon Gould. Gould, an inspiring Aleut from Unga, Alaska, sowed the seeds of this university. Remarkably, later in his life, he achieved the distinction of being the first Alaska Native minister in the United Methodist Church. His vision powered his quest for a Methodist University in Alaska.
Our university journey commenced with the dedication of our campus, etched in time on June 28, 1959. Driven by the passionate spirit of Dr. Donald F. Ebright, the first administrative president elected in April 1958, the university spurred on. 1960 was another zenith point in our journey, with Frederick P. McGinnis stepping into the role of acting president, guiding the first generation of students with astounding wisdom.
In a historic deal, in 1973, 900 acres of expansive land came into our possession. It sculpted the picturesque APU Kellogg Campus, once part of the sprawling DeWolf-Kellogg Trust. To this date, it remains a haven of academic and cultural exchange for our students.
The year 1978 marked a significant transformation in our journey. The then Alaska Methodist University matured into what we now revere as Alaska Pacific University. The metamorphosis embodied our commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Despite our deep-rooted origins in Judeo-Christian traditions of United Methodism, we have always been proud of our secular, non-doctrinal creed imprinted in our educational settings.
In the 21st century, we made strides towards recognising and celebrating our local communities. In 2016, APU formed a beneficial alliance with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, the zenith of Tribal health organisations in the country.
