Once upon a time, way back in 1817, a group of determined leaders, Judge Woodward and Father Richard, took a bold step. They founded the 'Catholepistemiad or University of Michigania'. Confused by the name? It's okay, they kept playing around with it until in 1837, they finally stuck with the 'University of Michigan'!
Back then, the University was settled in Detroit, the heart of America's industrial muscle. It was cozy but they soon realised, 'we need more space, folks!' So, in 1837, they packed their bags and shifted base to Ann Arbor, which has been their home ever since and what a home it's been!
Remember the year 1870? Probably not, but this was a milestone for the University. Madeleine Stockwell knocked on doors and broke down barriers to become the first woman admitted. You go girl! It was like sparking a light, the University was soon buzzing with the brightest minds from all walks of life.
Our story doesn't end in 1870, it just gets more exciting. Fast forward to 1890, it's crowd time and around 2500 students were part of the University. It’s a pretty decent figure, right? Well, today, would you believe it, there are over 43,000 students navigating their way around the University's dizzying array of courses!
What is a University without innovation? Boring, some might say. Not this University. From the Polio vaccine in 1955 to the Internet in 1969, the University of Michigan has always been at the forefront of breakthroughs. You got that right, folks, the Internet. Makes you wonder what we'd all be doing without it!
They also think about our planet a lot. Renowned biologist Alfred Hershey, a Michigan Alumnus, won the Nobel Prize in 1969 for his work in DNA. So, while you and I may not understand the 'nitty-gritties' of it all, to put it simply, their work has been revolutionary.
Here's the cherry on the cake. The University of Michigan boasts of a network... no, not WiFi, but of successful alumni, spread across various walks of life. From President Gerald Ford to Google co-founder Larry Page, the legacy is illustrious. Imagine the friends you could make!
So, as they say, class is permanent and from its humble beginnings as Catholepistemiad, the University of Michigan has evolved to become a renowned global institution. Rooted in a rich history, it continues to shape the future. Ready to be a part of this journey? Bring your dreams along. We will help you make them come true.
