In the picturesque town of Atherton in 1927, Menlo College was just beginning as an addition to the Menlo School for Boys. The institution, initially comprising just 27 attendees, witnessed a rapid growth under the stewardship of Dr. Lowry Howard. And so, Menlo School and Junior College was born, witnessing a surged enrolment of 112 students by the subsequent year.
The genesis was not without challenges. The ripples of the 1929 economic upheaval threatened Menlo's journey in 1931. However, two key rescue missions surfaced, one was a series of loans by the Board Chairman C. F. Michaels, and the other, was the granting of a strip of land by the Town of Atherton, whose intent for a new road was swapped for the need for Menlo's expansion.
During those precocious times, a unique prospect germinated between Dr. Howard, Mr. Michaels, and Dr. Ray Lyman Wilbur, then president of Stanford University. They wished to transform Menlo into Stanford's lower division, but the proposal was declined. Despite the setback, Wilbur maintained his interest and assigned six Stanford faculty members as educational advisors for Menlo in 1933.
World War II impacted student enrolments at Menlo. Dr. Howard, in turn, brought in a "four-four" plan, giving equal division levels to both the school and the college. As the war was nearing its end, a health crisis prompted Dr. Howard to step down, and Dr. William E. Kratt, a seasoned academic and then Navy personnel, was appointed his successor.
Post-war years saw the incorporation of Menlo's first four-year program - the School of Business Administration, primarily to accommodate for Stanford's surplus undergraduate business students after their business courses dropped. Around this time, Menlo College was set on the path to expanded growth and improvement with its status of a tax-exempt higher education institution.
The period from 1954 to 1976 brought significant additions to Menlo, like the construction of Howard and Michaels Halls, the novelty of seven houses donation by Hewlett-Packard, and the erection of the Florence Moore Science and Engineering Building. All the while, the institution continued to adapt to evolving dynamics in student demography and academic programs.
Serendipity knocked on Menlo's door in 2008 in the form of an outstanding contribution worth $21.3 million from the Hope Bartnett Belloc Trust. This record-breaking gift was an acknowledgement of the positive influence the college had on the trust's benefactor, Martin, during his academic year in 1962-63.
Stretching across the 21st century, Menlo earned multiple recognitions, witnessing its reaccreditation in 2009, and introducing new degrees. The most notable achievements were when Menlo was christened a "Best Regional College" and also gained AACSB accreditation, which only fewer than five percent of global business schools possess.
By 2014, Menlo College, through a book titled "Through the Gates: Eighty-five Years of Menlo College and its Times," encapsulated its rich heritage of eight and a half decades. The narrative juxtaposed each decade of the institution with national events and personal student anecdotes. Menlo's dedication to constant adaptation and growth continues, from inaugurating the 11th President and celebrating women's first half-century in the college to envisioning a new residence hall by the fall of 2022.
