Whisking off into historical retrospect, a small college flickered into existence in 1836, in Oxford, Georgia. Emory College, the seedling that would later grow into the renowned Emory University, was the brainchild of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Dedicated in memory of the Methodist bishop John Emory, the college was helmed by Ignatius Alphonso Few as its inaugural president.
A significant step that changed Emory College's trajectory was taken in 1854. Atlanta Medical College sprouted, a precursor to Emory University School of Medicine. With the abnormal interruption of the American Civil War in 1861, Emory College had to temporarily draw its curtains. What's of interest here, for our history buffs, is that much of the college was converted into a hospital and later a Union Army headquarters. Imagine how the echoes of war must have reverberated through its halls.
Fast forward a little and darkness had blanketed the post-war Southeast United States, the financial devastation clinging like an indelible shadow. Emory College, too, grappled with its struggles. But every dark cloud has a silver lining, and Emory College found their's in Atticus Greene Haygood. When Emory College President Haygood publicly voiced gratitude for the end of slavery, the bells of fortune chimed. New York banker George I. Seney was so moved by Haygood's words that he funded Emory College's debts, construction, and even established a new endowment.
Embracing technological progression, the 1880s saw the launch of a technology department at Emory. Courtesy of the polymath professor Isaac Stiles Hopkins, who eventually took the helm of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Just a few years later, Emory graduated its first international student, Yun Chi-ho, a name of great significance in Korean political history.
Emory took bigger strides in the 20th century — expanding, growing, making a mark. With Wesley Memorial Hospital and Training School for Nurses blooming in 1906, followed by the Candler School of Theology, Emory was transforming. Transformation that escalated when it accepted a land grant from the founder of The Coca-Cola Company, Asa Griggs Candler, and moved to Druid Hills in 1915. Emory was reborn.
The university threw open its gates to the women's movement and civil rights movement, erasing gender and racial restrictions. In the 1950s and 1960s, Emory led the way in embracing diversity, being one of the first universities to establish an African-American studies program in 1971. The institute flourished under exceptional leadership, strengthening its reputation regionally with a commendable list of programs including solid education in medicine, law, theology, business, and liberal arts.
Balancing academia and societal responsibility, Emory actively participated in historical chapters like WWI and WWII, honoring its commitment to shaping a better world. The university enrolled military students, preparing men for military chaplaincy, and cemented its reputation as a responsible and civically-engaged institution.
Pivotal chapters of Emory's history were written in recent years as it welcomed the 21st century. There was the unprecedented $105 million donation from Robert Winship Woodruff and George Waldo Woodruff in 1979. The honor bestowed upon Rosa Parks in 2005 with the President Medal. The $1.5 million donation in 2015 to establish a John Lewis Chair in Civil Rights and Social Justice. These milestones only reaffirmedaEmory's commitment to progress, equality, and academic excellence.
Emory’s journey didn’t stop there. In January 2018, the university was annexed into the City of Atlanta, marking a significant change. By August 2020, Gregory L. Fenves, formerly the president of the University of Texas at Austin, stepped up as Emory University's 21st president. Today, Emory stands tall, emanating its influence far and wide, embodying the spirit of knowledge and excellence that was ignited in 1836. A rich history steeped in resilience, academic superiority, and an unwavering commitment to bettering the world, is what makes Emory University a revered name amongst educational institutions worldwide.
