Let's take a trip back in time to the Reconstruction period of 1865 when the concept of a technology school in Georgia was birthed. Imagine Major John Fletcher Hanson, an industrialist, and Nathaniel Edwin Harris, an ambitious politician, leading the campaign. The backdrop was a South striving to catch up with the industrial revolution sweeping across the North. The crux of the idea was the realization - they needed a technology school to compete!
Fast-forward to 1882, the dream was becoming a reality. Backed by the Georgia State Legislature, the seeds for the Georgia Institute of Technology were planted. A committee headed by Harris, took a learning expedition to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Worcester County Free Institute of Industrial Science. They came back with a model that was a perfect blend of theory and practice.
Now, picture the excitement on October 13, 1885, as Georgia Governor Henry D. McDaniel gave his official stamp of approval for the new school.
