History Spelman College

Founded on April 11, 1881, the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary was not just a school, but a beacon of hope for Black freedwomen. It all began in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Harriet E. Giles and Sophia B. Packard, two teachers from the Oread Institute of Worcester, Massachusetts, journeyed specifically to Atlanta, brimming with the commitment to empower African American women. They were energized by the support from Frank Quarles, the pastor of Friendship Baptist Church.

Starting out with humble resources, 11 pioneering African-American female students, and a donation of $100, Giles and Packard nurtured a grand vision. They saw beyond the prevailing illiteracy among their initial students and aspired to establish a liberal arts institution. In a remarkable show of ambition, their intended curriculum bore a range ahead of its time, encompassing algebra, physiology, Latin, geometry, political economy, chemistry and more.

Within one term, the school's reputation ignited interest, and the enrollment grew to 80 students. The Woman's American Baptist Home Mission Society (WABHMS), with which Giles and Packard were affiliated, supported this growing mandate with promised further backing. Valuing this noble cause, they organized a significant down payment for an expansive nine-acre plot not far from Friendship Baptist Church. The site had leftover Civil War encampment buildings that would serve as the first classrooms and dorms.

In 1882, Giles and Packard engaged in a significant bid in Massachusetts that led them to a serendipitous meeting with an affluent Northern Baptist businessman, John D. Rockefeller. Viewing the seminary personally just two years later, Rockefeller was deeply impressed. Over 600 students and 16 faculty members had joined the seminary by then, thanks to continual support from Black Atlanta churches and philanthropists along with volunteer efforts. Moved by such astounding progress, Rockefeller not only cleared the debt on the property but also initiated endorsement from his wife, Laura Spelman Rockefeller, and his in-laws – the Spelmans, who were longtime abolitionist activists.

Honoring this generous family's commitment, the school was renamed Spelman Seminary in 1884, and the oldest building, Rockefeller Hall, was built in 1886. Packard took on the role of Spelman’s first president in 1888, serving till her demise in 1891, after which Giles took over till 1909. Diverting from being a diploma granting institution, Spelman began endowing its students with their first college degrees in 1901.

The period from 1910 to 1953 marked significant advancements and transitions. Lucy Hale Tapley took over as the president after Giles passed away. Still rooted in the societal norms of the times, the college emphasized women's responsibility for family and home. Practical coursework was highlighted, including the strengthening of the nursing curriculum and the construction of a teachers' dormitory and a home economics building. The Granddaughters' Club was created special for students from families that had a Spelman lineage.

Crucial changes came in September 1924 when the Spelman Baptist Seminary became Spelman College. Under the leadership of Florence Matilda Read, who assumed the presidency in 1927, they formed an "agreement of affiliation" with Morehouse College and Atlanta University by establishing the Atlanta University Center in 1929. The college continued the focus on collegiate education and ceased its elementary and high school divisions.

Involvement in civil rights came in the 1960s, as Spelman students challenged the status quo. The first arrests for participation in sit-ins occurred in 1962, with Professor Howard Zinn being dismissed for backing these activities. The next couple of decades saw a notable growth pattern with Spelman establishing a study abroad program, an across-the-curriculum writing initiative, an honors program, and a Women's Research and Resource Center. The college also received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1958.

Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole became the first Black female president of Spelman College in 1987 and led the most successful capital campaign between 1986 and 1996. However, it was the $100 million donation in 2024 by trustee Ronda Stryker and her husband, William Johnston, that marked Spelman's most significant funding milestone, securing the future of many prospective students. Today, as we honor the 11 presidents since its inception, we salute the vision of Spelman College that has impacted countless lives over generations and continues on its mission.
