Jump back to 1906, when the University of West Georgia (UWG) first got off the ground. Picture this, Dr. Irvine S. Ingram, a local lad with a white-hot passion for education, kicked off the grand endeavour of setting up the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School. His vigorous mission wasn’t just to create any ole school, but to provide access to top-notch education for fellow Georgians and eventually who knows? Even for bright young students from across the globe, like from India.
Now, no story worth its salt lacks a bit of drama, right? Well, the University of West Georgia dodged quite a blow during Great Depression. Dust was flying and pennies were tight but, believe it or not, the school kept the ball rolling thanks to a small group of determined educators. Not to toot our own horn, but this gritty band didn't just save the day; they made the school even better than before - talk about turning lemons into lemonade.
Moving on to 1933, the institution got a brand-new face lift and sat proudly as West Georgia College. At this point, the stakes were higher, the school now more than just the cream of the crop in skills training, but also a full-fledged institution for higher learning! A shiny beacon of education that was drawing curious seekers of knowledge like bees to honey.
For the next three decades, there were a lot of pots on the fire. One of those was the ambitious goal of turning West Georgia College into a university. The effort was spearheaded by the then President, Dr. James E. Boyd. This chap had a head for heights and thanks to his tirelessness the long-sought-after rebranding was achieved in 1996. West Georgia College metamorphosed into the beautiful butterfly that we now know as the University of West Georgia.
And talk about a tempest in a teapot when we got our hand on the advanced technology of an online learning system in 2013. It gave an opportunity for many striving young minds to fulfil their dreams from back home in India. "No need to move mountains to learn, just move a mouse!" we cheerfully said.
Now, let's get a tin out for our wonderful faculty. They are the heart and soul of the University of West Georgia. They burn the midnight oil, day in and day out, to provide quality education and to guide future leaders. Some say the proof of the pudding is in the eating and our educators have definitely acted the mustard.
Lastly, don’t overlook the cherry on top of our story. We’ve proudly ranked amongst top national universities in the U.S. for seven consecutive years! For Indian parents, what could be a more comforting ring? Uh-huh, that's right!
