The tale of Auburn University in Alabama, America's great melting pot, starts way back in 1856. Can you imagine? Blue jeans hadn't been invented yet! Remarkable is the only word for it, and old Auburn stands as a stalwart symbol of blooming education ever since. In 1856, a private women's college called East Alabama Male College was founded by the Methodist Church. Now isn't that a fancy bit of history!
Jump a bit forward, and in 1872 things got shaken up, a bit like that adrenaline rush from a Bollywood showdown. The college decided it was time to change its name, like rebranding it. Sort of like when you decide to call your annoying little brother by his full name when you've had enough! It was renamed as Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama - less of a tongue twister!
Now, it's 1892, and even though the world was yet to see the first slice of pepperoni pizza, something astonishingly remarkable happened that would change the face of Auburn - it began accepting women. It’s a bit hard to picture, but that was a harbinger of dramatic developments on the horizon. This was the kind of plot twist your mom warns you about in your favorite saas-bahu serial.
A few cricket pitches forward, during the belt-loosening phase in 1899 after all the gobsmacking developments, the college once again changed the name. The honchos decided “Alabama Polytechnic Institute”, that’s what they called it, reflecting an expanded academic program and, of course, adding a dash of that scholarly charisma.
Now, over the servings of naan and daal makhani, why not talk about 1960s when the name took another turn? Yeah, in 1960 they finally nailed down the name, Auburn University, much simpler and, let's be frank, less of a mouthful! Can you imagine rooting for a sports team called the “Alabama Polytechnic Tigers”? Bit much, innit?
In 1984, finally deciding it's high time, the university's powers-that-be goes and makes Dr. Hanly Funderburk the president. Now, there's a name you won't be forgetting in a hurry, sounds almost straight out of Harry Potter!
Fast forward to 2001, and the campus had transformed significantly. With over 24,000 students, Auburn University was like our big Indian families during a wedding. Full, buzzing, vibrant. It was a mad mix of culture, languages, dreams, and aspirations.
The most recent decade extends the tradition of postgraduate studies in Auburn. Today, the university boasts of more than 140 majors - almost as many as the different kinds of pani puri you can try in India! There’s something for everyone.
And, the cherry on the sundae: in 2020, U.S. News and World Report placed Auburn as the 44th public university in the U.S. A force to reckon with, wouldn’t you say? And that, my esteemed reader is the journey, full of twists and turns, like a classic Bollywood film, of dear ol' Auburn University. So, hold onto your chai glasses and brace yourself for a joyride of knowledge and adventure, and who knows you might become part of the next big chapter in its history!
