As our tale begins, once upon a breezy time in 1862, honest Lincoln, yes the very same Abe Lincoln, gave thumbs up to the Morrill Act (Hey, who knew!) This nifty piece of paperwork paved the yellow brick road for universities sprouting left, right and center, across the grand ol' USA. Fast forward a few years to 1865, our hero in this saga, the University of Maine, got its shiny charter. Given birth in what my Yankee counterparts call the 'Pine Tree State', Maine started off as the humble Maine State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. Score one for syllable count, amiright?
Fast forward again to 1887, change was in the air. The lengthy Maine State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was reinvented, emerging as the University of Maine, like a pheonix rising from the inky ashes of its long-winded paper trail. While this University of Maine mightn’t have Hogwarts' moving staircases or secret passages, its first building, Coburn Hall, did have a healthy dose of 19th Century charm.
Called into existence in 1888, Coburn Hall wasn't alone for long as the Winslow Hall came into the mix in 1892. This might've been a case of sibling rivalry had the two not been dedicated to separate disciplines, with agriculture being the hot topic at Winslow Hall and science getting its due at Coburn Hall.
Along came the 20th Century and with it the bustling era of 1911. It wasn't all top hats and high teas though. Shackled by the grasp of dwindling funds, the University's funding was cut. Dark times indeed for our beloved institution but just like movies with happy endings, brighter days were on the way. Remember, every cloud has that sneaky silver lining!
The high-flying 20's came rolling and with them emerged more state-of-the-art buildings. They went crazy over there, knocking up structures like there was no tomorrow. Stevens Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the President's House, this veritable triumvirate of power changed the face of the campus forever. And nobody complained!
Soon enough, the hustle bustle of the roaring 20s subsided and we were staring down the barrel of the 30s, swept under the gloomy clouds of financial strain. Here’s where the story takes a brighter turn, and a bit of hearty applause for Mr. President Franklin D. Roosevelt for bringing in the New Deal.
By the 1960s, things were humming along nicely. These were excellent days found the Alma Mater completing its centennial celebration in style, capping the party off with the addition of more than, hold your breath, 60 buildings. Could it be true? Good things do come in large packages!
Into the 21st century, the University of Maine continued to grow and reach new heights. With a total student population crossing 10,000 (yes, you heard right), this University had transformed itself into a roaring LION, upholding its place amidst the seven public universities in Maine.
Somewhere in this whirlwind of expansion and innovation, the University of Maine forgot to age, much like a timeless Hollywood superstar swathed in grace and wisdom. Even as time has marched on, the University of Maine stands, a beacon of academic prowess and growth, a colossal testament to the enduring spirit of education. The End. Phew! Now, wasn't that a ride!
