The story of The Art Institutes, a system of private art colleges, is just like an intricate painting. It all started, my dear friends, back in the jolly year 1969. Yes, you heard it right - the times of love and peace were also the times of educational revolutions. Edwin Walter, a man with a golden vision, decided to crank open the doors to the first Art Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the USA.
Now, you might be asking yourself "But why Pittsburgh?" Well, my dear reader, Pittsburgh was the breeding ground for the American industrial revolution. So, it was only fitting that a new sort of revolution, an art education revolution, should start there.
As the years went by, The Art Institutes started to multiply like rabbits, spreading all across the States, faster than a Bollywood hit becomes a chartbuster. By 2000, there were around thirty campuses scattered across the country like stars in the night sky, giving a chance to wide-eyed dreamers to imprint their unique artistic stamp onto the world.
However, every painting has its shares of strokes gone awry. The Art Institutes endured a bout of bad luck in 2010. You see fellas, sometimes when you grow too quick, too fast – things start to get a tad out of hand. The then-owners, Education Management Corporation, got in a bit of a pickle, finding themselves in the eye of a legal storm.
Despite the hurdles, 'A phoenix must burn to emerge', isn't that what we often say? In the nick of time, along came the Dream Center Foundation in 2017. They scooped up a majority of the Art Institutes from the Education Management Corporation, giving it a new lease of life and a fresh direction.
The evergreen Art Institutes have indeed stood the test of time like a sturdy Banyan tree. Initially catering to less than 50 students, nowadays it's grooming thousands of students, budding artists from all around the world. From programs in design, media arts, culinary arts... you name it, and they probably have it.
However, not every tale can be all sunshine and marigolds. Some of the campuses have had to close down in recent years, while others have transferred wings under different organizations. But, it's important to remember - what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?
Speaking of strength, The Art Institutes has more than 150 specialist programs. Not only this, but it also has an online division for those who are bitten by the creativity bug but would prefer to learn from their cosy haven.
In a nutshell, the journey of The Art Institutes has had more twists and turns than the spicy plots of our beloved colourful Bollywood movies. But just like the heroes in those films, The Art Institutes continues to march forward, nurturing fresh talent globally. The story is not over yet, fellas, as The Art Institutes continues to write its future chapters. Concluding here would be unfair, eh?
