Imagine a daring dream conceived by an ambitious man. One that involved pizza, an influential Catholic philanthropist and the aspiration to create a world-class educational institution. That man was Tom Monaghan, the renowned owner and founder of Domino's Pizza. Launching his audacious plan on 19th March 1998, he breathed life into a deserted property in Ypsilanti, Michigan: Ave Maria College. This establishment was nestled comfortably near Eastern Michigan University, creating the soft hum of an academic hub.
Take a moment to step into Monaghan's shoes. His vision of a Roman Catholic university, authentic to the magisterium of the Catholic Church, envisioned students steeped in liberal arts education, all under the watchful eyes of a Catholic environment. His grand plan even featured constructing a full college campus on his 280-acre land in Ann Arbor, lovingly referred to as Domino's Farms. The fascinating blueprint included a 25-story crucifix, about half the stature of the Washington Monument. Monaghan dared to dream, and he dreamed big.
Life is peppered with unexpected turns. Denied zoning approval by Ann Arbor Township to expand his existing campus near Domino's Farms, Monaghan, displaying unmatched grit, relocated to Florida. In the sunny landscape of Naples, Monaghan seeded Ave Maria University, fuelled by an impressive $250 million donation. Come August 2003, an interim campus emerged in The Vineyards, Naples, welcoming around 100 undergraduate students, with freshmen forming the majority. Simultaneously, Monaghan began chalking out plans for a new campus in Ave Maria, Florida.
Fast forward to 2007. The Ypsilanti campus closed its doors at the end of 2006–2007 academic year, leaving just three students for its final year and a handful of staff. Monaghan determinedly directed most of the staff to the Florida location. Although the Michigan branch held until students graduated or transferred, Monaghan's eyes were firmly set on the recently developed Florida campus.
In the same year, Ave Maria University shifted from its temporary location to its new home in Florida. The inaugural batch on the fresh campus consisted of approximately 450 undergraduates and 150 graduate students. The following year, the local Catholic Bishop, Frank Dewane, formalised the launch of the university.
The journey had its bumps. March 2007 led to the dismissal of the university's then provost, Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J., by Monaghan. The reason behind this decision remains undisclosed. This prompted the first-ever student protests in the university, sparking critiques from renowned figures such as Philip F. Lawler, conservative editor of Catholic World News. Fessio was reinstated the following day as a theologian-in-residence. However, Fessio found himself dismissed once again in 2009 due to concerns over some administrative policies. To this day, the position of the provost remains vacant.
Monaghan's commitment to expand the university, envisioning an enrollment over 5,000, Division I Athletics and a reputation of being a "Catholic Ivy," remained undeterred. Stepping in as the president of Ave Maria University in 2011, James Towey, former Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and ex-President of Saint Vincent College, chalked out plans for the university's future. In 2011, Towey also took over the role of CEO, stepping into Monaghan's shoes, while Monaghan transitioned into the position of Chancellor.
The financial turmoil of 2008 left its mark on Ave Maria's financial stability. The construction costs doubled over a span of three years, compelling the university to cut down on infrastructural developments. Owing to the plummeting real estate market in Florida, the plans for a new building for Ave Maria School of Law faced a delay. The university survived the crisis due to Monaghan's remarkable gesture of funding a whopping ten million dollar annual deficit. Owing to efforts directed towards controlling costs and garnering increased contributions, Towey successfully steered the university back to a firm financial footing by 2014.
While the course of the university's growth hasn't seamlessly flowed as initially anticipated, Ave Maria University engraved its name in history. From hosting a smaller campus in Nicaragua for an impressive 13 years before selling it to Keiser University in 2013, to standing tall among the Top 8% of colleges as one of the "Best Colleges for the Money" in 2021, the name Ave Maria University echoes across global corridors. Embellishing its legacy, every day, every year, the journey of Ave Maria University continues, carving a niche in the broader landscape of higher education.
