Endowed by the Baltimore City School Board, its mission was strengthening the foundation of education by preparing proficient African-American elementary school teachers. The school's training trajectory took a leap by 1902 as it pumped up the program into a two-year Normal Department within the high school itself. Fast forward seven years, and the training juggernaut gained momentum, breaking away from the high school and receiving its very own principal.
A standout name, Fanny Jackson Coppin, received honors in 1926 when the teacher training facility been christened Fanny Jackson Coppin Normal School.
