In the heart of the gorgeous city of Baltimore, Maryland, a tale was being spun, the tale of an institution that would illuminate the minds of many generations to come. The year was 1852, and a man named John Early, along with eight other members of the Society of Jesus, or as we often call them, the Jesuits, were sowing the seeds for Loyola College, the first college in the United States to be named after St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Just imagine the flourishing cityscape of Baltimore at that time, where this new college found its first home in two grand townhouses on Holliday Street. But it took only three years for Loyola to break free from those walls and find a new dwelling. In 1855, this growing educational body relocated to a newly built structure on North Calvert Street. Then as the world transformed around it, Loyola continued to adapt, eventually settling down in its current 'Evergreen' campus in north Baltimore in 1922.
The 1930s saw the high school section of Loyola venture northwards to Towson, just outside Baltimore. Then the ground-breaking year of 1949 came along, and with it established a graduate division in education. This was only the beginning; more graduate programs were soon added, from business management in 1968 to a program in Finance in 1973, the college steadily grew into a powerhouse of academic diversity.
By 1971, the landscape and culture at Loyola took a significant turn. Merging with the then financially struggling Mount Saint Agnes College, Loyola became coeducational. That very year a new lay chairperson was elected to the college's Board of Trustees, marking a shift towards inclusivity and diversity.
Loyola continued to evolve, transitioning from a small commuter college to a residential one, boasting an undergraduate population of more than 4,000 students. 1981 was a remarkable year, for Loyola saw the launch of its separate business school, The Rev. Joseph A. Sellinger, Jr., School of Business and Management, in a stride towards specialized education.
But Loyola didn't merely grow within the boundaries of its campus. Its horizons extended by opening two graduate centers in Timonium and Columbia, deeper into the heart of Maryland.
