Latrobe, Hezekiah Niles, and Thomas Kelso, among other distinguished citizens. This collective dream birthed the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts in 1826. The character of this institute was defined by many influential leaders of its time, among them William Stewart, the first president, George Warner and Fielding Lucas Jr., the vice presidents, and distinguished managers, James H.
