History Maryland Institute College of Art

In the heart of Baltimore, there once was an idea. A bold vision conceived by the likes of Fielding Lucas Jr., John H. B. Latrobe, Hezekiah Niles, and Thomas Kelso, among other distinguished citizens. This collective dream birthed the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts in 1826. The character of this institute was defined by many influential leaders of its time, among them William Stewart, the first president, George Warner and Fielding Lucas Jr., the vice presidents, and distinguished managers, James H. Clarke and D.P. McCoy.

Their first home was a grand edifice called "The Athenaeum" situated at the intersection of East Lexington and St. Paul Street. Tragically, a devastating fire consumed this building in 1835 and the institution had to start anew in 1848. A rebirth with fresh aspirations, they held their first exhibition at the "Washington Hall" and began expanding their influence with a School of Design.

The institute, in 1851, made its robust return in its own building, splendidly mounted atop the old Centre Market. These were formative times and the institute grew, adding a school of Chemistry as well as a School of Music, supported in part by George Peabody, the philanthropist and Thomas Swann. The advent of night classes helped a wider audience reap the benefits of education in Architecture and Engineering.

By 1854, one of the first US arts programs for women was established. This era of growth did not come without its share of historical significance. The institute hosted the national political conventions in 1852; President Lincoln delivered his famous "Baltimore Address" in 1864 within its halls, and in the tumultuous times of the American Civil War, the institute served as an armoury and a hospital.

Disaster struck once again in 1904, when the institute was lost to the Great Baltimore Fire. This led to relocation of classes above other markets temporarily until 1908, when the grand Main Building on Mount Royal Avenue opened, thanks to Michael Jenkins' benevolence and the city's support. This location became the cradle for pottery, metalworking, wood carving, libraries and galleries.

The 1920s marked the introduction of the Aeronautics theory course and a landmark public showcasing of Henri Matisse's work in the United States. Fast forward to 1959, the institute changed its name to the Maryland Institute, College of Art, a fitting testament to its evolution and stature.

For a brief period in 1968, MICA had to shut its doors due to the Baltimore riot but soon reopened, expanding prolifically along Mount Royal Avenue in the subsequent years. From this progressive surge emerged the "Fox Building" in 1978, the "Meyerhoff House" in 2002, and several others.

Today, MICA has not just established its physical presence but continues to foster partnerships and programs with countries all over the globe, creating a hub of creative artistry mirrored in their vibrant logo. An enduring tale of resilience, evolution, and educational excellence, MICA continues to be a guiding beacon in the realm of arts education, a legacy crafted by the pioneers of the past and trailblazers of the present.
