The tale of Lees-McRae College begins back in 1899. Reverend Edgar Tufts - a passionate Presbyterian minister, believed in the power of education to change lives. So, in the charming town of Banner Elk, he established an all-girls high school. Tufts was a visionary and took inspiration from an acclaimed educator for the school's title, Elizabeth McRae Institute in the year 1900.
We now enter the year 1903. The story gains a new hero - benefactor Suzanna Lees. Her name was added to the school's title, and a transformation began. In 1907, The Lees-McRae Institute was officially recognized and chartered by the state, marking a significant milestone in its growing prestige.
A pivotal moment arrived later that same year when the Lees-McRae Institute spread its wings with an all-boys branch in Plumtree, North Carolina. However, destiny had a different plan. A huge fire razed the Plumtree facility in 1927. This led to a momentous decision to merge the two establishments at the original Banner Elk location.
After this amalgamation, changes were on the horizon. The high school program phased out a few years later. Elevating its academic offerings, the institute became an accredited coeducational junior college in 1931. Reflecting this broadened scope, it fittingly adopted a new college moniker, Lees-McRae College.
Fast forward to the 1980s, and a decision was in the offing. Projecting a four-year academic program became the goal. In 1987, upon the school's president's recommendation, the trustees were over the moon and gave their approval for the ambitious endeavor.
Three years later, in 1990, Lees-McRae’s efforts paid off. The respectable Southern Association of Colleges and Schools indeed granted the college status as a prestigious four-year institution. It meant a big leap forward in defining the college's academic identity.
