Lyon College's enduring presence has earned it the distinction of being the oldest independent institution in Arkansas. Can you believe that all began with the vision of a man named Isaac J. Long?
Jump back in time to 1871. The powers-that-be in Arkansas were trying to select a suitable city to establish an iconic state college. The choices were down to two - Fayetteville and Batesville. Fayetteville, with its supportive locals and ready funds, won the bid. However, this didn’t dampen the spirits of Batesville's residents and its indomitable Rev. Isaac J. Long.
Long's incredible perseverance and passion inspired him to spearhead the revolutionary project of setting up a college right in the heart of Batesville. Along with other distinguished colleagues from the Presbyterian church, they christened it - Arkansas College at Batesville. An amazing moment etched in college's history occurred when Governor Ozra Amander Hadley inked his signature on the institution's charter in 1872.
A year later, Arkansas College at Batesville's first permanent edifice, known as Morrow Hall, stood tall and proud. The commendable Long family took care of this exceptional establishment until their reign ended in 1952. Their incredible journey witnessed a change in leadership when Dr. Paul M. McCain took the college's reins.
In 1994 the college adopted a new name - Lyon College, in honor of the influential Lyon family of Arkansas. The involvement of the Lyon family deeply transformed the institution. For instance, Frank Lyon Sr., who held the esteemed position as the board of trustees' chairman, shaped the college's destiny from 1946 to 1988.
Frank Lyon Jr., mirroring his father's dedication, continued to serve on the board for nearly 30 bountiful years until he breathed his last in 2015. His memory was also fondly remembered for the generous gift bestowed by him and Jane Lyon. It was the biggest monetary gift to the college till date, a whopping $10 million.
Years passed, and the college experienced changes in its leadership. W. Joseph King assumed the role of president in 2017, succeeding Donald V. Weatherman and his commendable service from 2009 to 2017. However, a new face took the helm in 2018, when Melissa Taverner became provost.
