In a nutshell, West Virginia University Institute of Technology embodies a harmonious blend of academic, cultural, and financial support, creating an environment conducive not only for robust academic advancement but also for the overall growth of its students. This could be the place where your dreams take flight!
The seed of what would later become the West Virginia University Institute of Technology was sown back in 1895. Nestled in the heart of Montgomery, West Virginia, an early incarnation of the college was born. Originally known as the Montgomery Preparatory School, the institution was a sub-collegiate institution for West Virginia University. Six years into the 20th century, in 1917, a remarkable shift occurred. The school underwent a separation event from WVU, adopting a new title - West Virginia Trade School.
A leap forward to the junior college level was made in 1921, transforming the institute into the New River State School. A decade later, in 1931, the institution progressed to a four-year college framework mixed with an identity change to New River State College. Further evolution took place in 1941, and the institution was renamed West Virginia Institute of Technology, indicating its focus and commitment towards technological education.
The journey of transformation continued, taking a notable turn in 1952. It was in this year that the world of engineering unfurled its wings at the college with the institution starting to confer engineering degrees. Fast forward to 1966, and another milestone was achieved with the addition of a community college within its premise.
The higher academics game was stepped up in 1978 when the institute started to confer master's degrees in engineering. Although currently, the institution doesn't provide graduate degrees, it was an important part of its development. Then came 2004, with WVU Tech's community college component separating from WVU Tech, making it part of the larger West Virginia University system.
In the latter half of the 1990s, more specifically 1996, the school underwent another transformation, becoming a regional campus of West Virginia University. Under this change, many administrative support departments directly reported to WVU while the academic program control remained within the WVU Tech campus. In 2007, the consolidation was further solidified, resulting in the institute becoming an integrated division of WVU.
Despite the forward strides in academics and transformation, the institution found itself facing a significant hurdle - a decline in enrollments. Aimed at addressing this, the state government passed the WVU Tech Revitalization Project law in 2011. An evaluation process was initiated, ending with a detailed revitalization report in October 2011. The final direction taken was a strategic one - a revitalization of the university's administrative staff and a relocation of the entire campus to Beckley, West Virginia, a bustling city offering immense opportunities.
Relocating the campus was no simple task. A process that started in 2015 finally came to fruition in the fall of 2017. Strategic movements were made with freshman courses at the Beckley campus starting in the 2016–2017 academic years and the transfer of all other academic programs, administrative offices, and athletic teams happening in Fall 2017.
Although relocation was a major gamble, the outcomes were impressive. The student population saw an increase from 1,106 students in 2017 to 1,622 in the spring of 2019. Furthermore, the university has been ranked as the best return-on-investment educational institution in West Virginia, a testament to its commitment to quality education and tangible career outcomes for its students.
Remnants of its history remain evident in its architectural landmarks. The prominent "Old Main" building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Neal D. Baisi Athletic Center, which served as the home for the Golden Bears' basketball teams, was completed in 1968.
Finally, a unique evolution occurred on April 21, 2017, when it was announced that sectors of the Montgomery campus would be repurposed. KVC Health Systems acquired the lease for some buildings for conversion into a transitional college for individuals aging out of foster care. BridgeValley Community & Technical College inherited some others. The remainder of the buildings became surplus property and remain unused today. A long journey indeed, but one that has seen the institution transform, adapt, and emerge stronger at each turn.
