In 1919, the seeds of Bemidji State University (BSU) were sown. The infant institution, known then as Bemidji State Normal School, was steered by its very first President, Manfred Deputy. That year, the first class of the institution comprised 38 aspiring minds, enthusiastic about their future.
Just two years later, the institution underwent a name change—it became Bemidji State Teachers College. Then in 1957, it underwent another transformation, becoming Bemidji State College. But the institution was not done evolving. In 1975, it morphed into what we all know today as Bemidji State University.
Towards the end of the 20th century, during the 1998–99 academic year, a disruptive proposal came up. The Board of Trustees, eager to align the institution's identity with a broader coalition, proposed a name change to Minnesota State University–Bemidji. This move would show unification within the newly formed Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, something other larger institutions had done.
But, this didn't go down well with everyone! A strong wave of opposition emerged. Students, alumni, even residents from the local Bemidji community raised their voice against the proposed change. The result? The board had to back down and withdraw their proposal.
Today, BSU boasts an impressive enrollment of about 5,300 students, representing many corners of the world. Its student base represents 44 US states and 40 countries globally, all brought together by their mutual pursuit of knowledge.
In more recent history, BSU named Faith Hensrud as its eleventh president. It was April 20, 2016, when the decision was announced. Prior to her appointment at BSU, Hensrud had been at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, working as a provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs since 2012.
But like all good things, Hensrud's tenure at BSU had to come to an end. On August 13, 2021, she dropped the retirement bombshell. Come June 30, 2022, she would hang up her boots and bid farewell to BSU.
To date, from Manfred Deputy to Faith Hensrud, twelve individuals have held the esteemed position of BSU president. Each has added their own unique touch to the institution's rich history and left a legacy for future presidents to build upon.
