In the bustling month of February, back in 2020, Bellevue College (BC) was alive with artistic expressions. The college proudly unfurled a mural - an evocative work of art, titled "Never Again Is Now". The artistry was conceived by Erin Shigaki, an artist renowned for capturing poignant moments on canvas. The mural portrayed the unnerving tale of two Japanese American children who had their childhood lost in the internment camps during the mournful epoch of World War II.
Now, the image wasn't just a standalone spectacle. Accompanying it, was a line of text that drew references to Miller Freeman, a distinguished Bellevue businessman. However, there was more to him than just trade - Freeman was notoriously famous, or rather infamous, for advocating anti-Japanese sentiments. This caption scribing Freeman's exploits, however, did not stick around for long, with Gayle Colston Barge opting for a revision.
Gayle, donning the role of Vice President of Institutional Advancement, decided on removing the citation attached with the mural. This alteration, seemingly minuscule at first, spun multiple heads around, triggering an outcry. The strongest of these voices came from a medley of active students and echoes from the Asian American community.
The uproar resulted in tangible consequences, with Barge being temporarily stripped of her duties and positioned on administrative leave. Gayle wasn't the only one whose actions had repercussions though. Jerry Weber, the then BC President, also bore the brunt of defending Barge's actions. The duo succumbed to the mounting pressures, and in a turn of events, handed in their resignations on March 2nd next month.
With the abrupt vacuum in leadership, a search commenced for a guiding beacon for BC. The former governor of Washington, Gary Locke, answered the college's call, stepping up as the interim president on a balmy May 28, 2020. Locke wasn't unfamiliar with leadership roles; he had been the twenty-first governor of Washington State. His rather illustrious career included stints at the Obama Administration; as U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and ended with him serving as the tenth Ambassador to China.
Locke's reign at BC wasn't long; it had a timeline and it ended by July 2023. However, despite its brevity, the term had a significant impact on the history of the college.
