Kicked off their journey in the West, the first settlers from Connecticut found solace in Northern Ohio, after losing their homes to the wrathful Revolutionary War led by Britain. As they set foot on these new lands, the region got dubbed as the Western Reserve and even had some parts as Firelands. These were the gifts from Connecticut in the aftermath of the war.
A pioneer among these settlers, John Baldwin prospered by tapping into the sandstone quarry industry. His visions of academic excellence gave birth to Baldwin Institute in 1845. In 1856, the institute leveled up to Baldwin University. Unique in its ethos, the university was a beacon of equality, opening its doors to students irrespective of their race or gender, with absolutely no segregation within courses as well.
Coinciding with the rise of Baldwin's enterprise, German laborers found employment in droves, laying the foundation for a German department at the university. Delivering a new academic bastion, Reverend Jacob Rothweiler established German Wallace College in 1855. He named it after James Wallace with a liberal outlook matching Baldwin University, where the enrolment was a free choice at either institution.
All good times had to come to an end. After the demise of Baldwin and Wallace, who were the main supporters, and the nosedive of Ohio’s quarry industry, the institution leaped from one financial problem to another. There were desperate measures considered like merging with Ohio Wesleyan University in 1874 to form the University of Cleveland. But the idea was eventually scrapped, and in 1913, Baldwin University and German Wallace College found their salvation through amalgamation, birthing the Baldwin–Wallace College.
The Second World War saw Baldwin Wallace playing a pivotal role. It was among the coveted 131 colleges across the nation participating in the V-12 Navy College Training Program, offering the youth a bright path towards earning a Navy commission.
Leap forward to mid-20th century, thanks much to Alfred Bryan Bonds. Under his guidance, the institution transformed into a large suburban entity with fifteen magnificent campus buildings. Bonds' leadership, coupled with the financial mastery of Neal Malicky, as the college president, secured the future of Baldwin Wallace. Several colleges, residences, and many other significant campus improvements bear testimony to the successful tenure of Mark Collier, the subsequent president.
Dick Durst, the BW President in 2011, led a task force that contributed to a monumental transition. In 2012, Baldwin–Wallace College metamorphosed into Baldwin Wallace University. An endorsement from BW Board of Trustees made it official with effect from July 1, 2012, with the full transition by year-end.
The university's prestige grew with hosting the eventual President Barack Obama and 2008 Presidential contender John McCain during their campaign trails. The last sitting president before Obama to grace BW was Ronald Reagan during George H. W. Bush's 1988 Presidential run. The 2016 Presidential campaign saw a visit from Bernie Sanders and Ohio Governor John Kasich's Ohio Presidential Primary election night party.
Leaving a historical and religious footmark, the BW trustees voted in 2019 to part ways with the United Methodist Church after a long journey of 174 years. Despite the change, Baldwin Wallace University continues to thrive, blending rich history with evolving educational ideals.
