Picture this: back in 1855, on a plot granted by fierce abolitionist Cassius Marcellus Clay, a one-room schoolhouse springs to life under the careful hands of John Gregg Fee, a zealous graduate from Augusta College. This isn't your typical school, though—it's a colorful mosaic of faces, a harmonious blend of black and white students. Named Berea, after the biblical city that echoed Fee's dedication to the principles of acceptance and communal education, this remarkable institution became the South's first non-segregated, coeducational college.
Bumps in the road? Certainly. In 1859, pro-slavery proponents forcefully ousted Fee and his teaching staff. But Fee, as tenacious as he was visionary, spent his Civil War years cultivating funds in Cincinnati, Ohio, all while securing facilities and education for freedmen and their families at Camp Nelson. His commitment didn’t waver despite the testing circumstances. He fearlessly straddled multiple roles including teaching, preaching, and even helped to raise finances for barracks, hospital, school, and church.
Upon the war's end in 1866, Fee returned to Berea, welcomed by eager students – 96 black, 91 white. The institution began by offering preparatory classes to brace students for higher study, with the onset of college-level admission occurring in 1869. This heterogeneity, however, wasn't mirrored elsewhere – Berea remained a significant exception in a sea of segregated Southern colleges.
Fast forward to 1904 – even Berea couldn't swim against the preconception current. A new law mandated segregation in education, transforming Berea into a whitewashed institution. Yet, ever-defiant, the college contested this ruling up to the U.S. Supreme Court. Although unsuccessful, Berea opted for a workaround – establishing the Lincoln Institute in 1912 to cater to black students. And when the law was finally amended in 1950 allowing integration at the college level? Berea didn't miss a beat, valiantly reinstating its mixed student body.
Meanwhile, in 1925, illustrious advertiser Bruce Barton sought funds for Berea. Reaching out to 24 affluent men with a request letter, he found unprecedented success – a minimum of $1,000 poured in from each recipient. Further, amidst the throes of World War II, Berea featured among the 131 colleges calling part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program, presenting students a unique opportunity to earn a navy commission.
Pivot to the 1960s – Berea began re-evaluating its educational scope. Deciding to streamline its focus solely on undergraduate education, the decision was made in 1968 to discontinue its elementary and secondary schools. The once humble, one-room schoolhouse dreamt up by Fee had matured into a full-fledged educational powerhouse dedicated to college curriculum, standing tall against social norms and legislations, in the true spirit of the biblical city it was named after; Berea, a beacon of education for every student who dared to dream.
