Can you imagine a success story of an academic institution that started from humble beginnings as an orphanage? This story spins the tale of Southern Nazarene University (SNU), a beacon of education rooted in downtown Oklahoma City. In 1899, a compassionate and visionary woman, Miss Mattie Mallory, didn't just see an orphanage; she envisioned the spark of an educational center that could uplift minds and souls.
With courage in her heart and an inherited fortune in her pockets, Mallory bought a patch of land to the city's north, christening it as Beulah Heights. An orphanage stood there, stretching its arms to the city's forgotten children. In 1906, a notable turn of events occurred. Beulah Heights Academy and Bible School were founded inside the orphanage premises, marking the real roots of the Oklahoma-based SNU. This educational institution was later baptized as Oklahoma Holiness College in 1909. With its new name, the school also moved to its newly bought territory in Bethany, west of Oklahoma City.
Now, this period in history saw the congregation of the Nazarene community blooming. As a result, financial hiccups began to ease out for the Oklahoma school, unlike other institutions of the time. In 1918, aligning with the establishment of the first Nazarene Educational Regions, the school modified its name to Oklahoma Nazarene College. Furthermore, a series of mergers lay in wait in SNU's journey that was about to shape its future.
In 1920, when the college merged with Peniel College, they rebranded themselves as Bethany-Peniel College. Interestingly, Peniel was just the first in line among the four Nazarene institutions that later amalgamated with the Oklahoma school. The following mergers involved Central Nazarene College, another Texas-based Nazarene school in 1929, and Arkansas Holiness College in 1931. The final merger took place with Bresee Theological College in 1940. As the historian Timothy L. Smith quotes, “Bethany became the Nazarene center for the whole Southwest."
You might get a chuckle out of this. To avoid any confusion with the term "penal" or "penal colony", the institution thought it best to change its name from Bethany-Peniel College to Bethany Nazarene College (BNC) in 1955. Later, in 1986, it eventually became the Southern Nazarene University (SNU) that we know today.
Navigating through the choppy waves of history, 1986 was a significant year for SNU. The university was placed on the American Association of University Professors's (AAUP) list of censured institutions when eight faculty members faced abrupt termination. The conflicting reasons behind their termination triggered the AAUP's curiosity, who then invested time and resources into investigating the matter. The initial reason cited for their termination was a financial crunch due to student retention drop and a decrease in enrolment. What raised eyebrows was a subsequent reason that hinted at "unspecified performance deficiencies" of the terminated faculty members.
As a result of the investigation and considerable deliberation, some of the dismissed faculty members were offered monetary aid. Despite their efforts, SNU remained on the AAUP's censured list for 18 long years, until it shaped academic tenure procedures that lived up to AAUP's standard. Finally, the AAUP lifted SNU's censure status in 2005.
While at it, worth mentioning about 2016, it marked a noteworthy year in SNU’s history when they were granted an exception to Title IX. This provision allowed the university to legally discriminate against LGBT students due to their religious reasons, adding another dimension to their historical journey. This concludes our compelling tale of SNU's origin and its journey over a century, making it the educational cornerstone of the southwest today.
