Once upon a time in 1742, nestled snugly in the land of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, stood the doors of the Bethlehem Female Seminary. Opening itself to the world it made its name as America's very first boarding school dedicated to the education of young women. This noble institution came to life through the aspirations of a determined, kind-hearted woman named Benigna, Countess von Zinzendorf. Being the daughter of Count Nikolaus Ludwig Zinzendorf, a benefactor of the Moravians in Nazareth and Bethlehem, Benigna found in herself the vision to usher in a new era of education.
Remarkably her passion transpired into the establishment of the Moravian Female Seminary, breathing life into it in 1863 through the certification of the Pennsylvania State Legislature. This very seminary blossomed into a women's college, known as the Moravian Seminary and College for Women in as late as 1913.
Around the same period, a set of two boy's schools mushroomed in 1742 and 1743. In the year 1759, these schools amalgamated to take a new form named Nazareth Hall, in the quaint town of Nazareth. This stepping stone led to the creation of the Moravian College and Theological Seminary in 1807. The Pennsylvania State Legislature again played the role of the catalyst, fostering its transformation into a degree-granting institution in 1863, while keeping its original name intact.
A paradigm shift in education transpired in the period of 1858 to 1892 when the seminary and college found a new home from Nazareth to Church Street in Bethlehem. This was on the grounds of a former boys' school, which doubled as the present day Bethlehem City Hall. Now, hitching northward, the men's Moravian College and Theological Seminary procured a generous plot donated by the Bethlehem Congregation of the Moravian Church in 1888.
At this northern berth, history witnessed the erection of two landmark buildings named Comenius Hall and Zinzendorf Hall. Sprouting in 1892, they flanked the existing quaint brick farmhouse which later gained its identity as Hamilton Hall. This trinity started forming the backbone of a new campus which till date proudly bears these heritage edifices.
In a significant evolution of events, 1954 experienced the amalgamation of the two divergent educational domains, forming a single, modern-day, integrated institution christened Moravian College. The post-merger period saw the unification of both the North and South campus, approximately 0.8 miles apart, connected by the aptly dubbed “Moravian Mile.” Also part of a traditional procession, first-year students are made to walk this very Moravian Mile during their orientation.
Fast forward to the year 2021, Moravian College, with its heritage and charm, had etched in place an impressive legacy of education. Recognizing its prowess, the Pennsylvania Department of Education conferred upon it the honored title of 'university' officially marking the momentous occasion on July 1, 2021. Thus, the olden Moravian College evolved to wear the new garb of Moravian University, continuing the age-long legacy while creating new history.
