Once upon a time, in the year 1939, a dynamic duo, Eleanor Tupper and her husband, George O. Bierkoe, ignited the spark of a revolutionary institution - Endicott Junior College. Founded for women as an interesting catalysis agent on their path to independence and to empower their role in the workplace, the flame of this establishment was fanned and named in honour of John Endicott. An early overseer of Harvard University and first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, he was a part of the first charter issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the same year.
Just a couple of years later, the college sprouted its first academic blossom as 20 students graduated in 1941. As three more years rolled by, the institution was recognised for granting associate degrees and within a decade in 1952, Endicott was accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. You could feel the educational energy surging as the college underwent another transformation in 1975, shedding the 'Junior', to emerge as Endicott College.
Starting as a tiny, but ambitious seed in the educational garden, this institution took massive strides under the watchful eyes of its nurturers. George Bierkoe, one of the founders himself, served as the first president till 1971. The torch was then passed to Eleanor Tupper–who dedicated nine years to fostering the growth of Endicott till the year 1980. Taking us behind the scenes, she shared the fascinating journey in her intriguing book, Endicott and I, published in 1985.
After Eleanor’s tenure, Carol Hawkes took up the mantle of the president in 1980. An instrumental period commenced as during this time, Endicott transcended from being a two-year to an elaborate four-year institution. After Carol, Francis Gamelin guided the college through a regime of transition as Endicott's fourth president while the search for a new leader continued. How can we not appreciate the whopping three-decades-long tenure of Richard E. Wylie, who became the fifth president of this evolving institution in 1988? His tenure was marked by the construction of more than 20 new buildings, expanding the campus to 235 acres near the scenic coast of Beverly. After his demise in May 2018, Dr. Kathleen Hildreth Barnes assumed interim presidency steering the ship until the seventh president, Dr.Steven R. DiSalvo, took office in 2019.
Incorporating the historical elegance in its blueprint, Endicott College boasts of many architectural marvels in its campus. For those of you wondering about the glorious journey this college has been through, each building stands as a testament to its rich past. Take Reynolds Hall for instance, which was the first building purchased by the college and turned into student accommodation ever since its doors opened in 1939.
Zooming into 1940, the college's property expanded when it purchased two more heritage buildings: Alhambra and College Hall. While Alhambra, the oldest structure built in 1750, turned into student housing, the 1916-built College Hall currently houses numerous administrative offices, including the Office of the President. Endicott's connection to history deepened with Tupper Manor, purchased in 1943, now part of the Wylie Inn and Conference Center, and Winthrop Hall, bought in 1944, today offering student housing.
Understanding the importance of blending tradition with innovation, Endicott expanded its horizon once again by adding the Beechwood property in 2010 to serve as the trustee center and the president's residence. This building too carries a lineage as it was designed at the turn of the 20th century as a summer estate for the famed Ames family of Easton, Massachusetts.
Now, if you wonder how well Endicott College is faring today, let numbers do the talking. Approximately 3,000 undergraduates pursue their dreams here, joined by over 2,500 students enrolled in the School of Graduate & Professional Studies. Hundreds utilise the opportunity to expand their world view by studying abroad while more than 25,000 alumni spread across the globe are proof of Endicott's commitment to global education.
