History Virginia Tech

Take a journey back in time, to the year 1872. Virginia Tech emerged from the lingering ashes of the Morrill Act of 1862. The Virginia General Assembly, taking advantage of funds from this federal act, set about purchasing the facilities of Preston and Olin Institute, a small Methodist boys school in the rural countryside of Montgomery County, Southwest Virginia. That same year, 250 acres of the lush Solitude Farm accompanied the school, bought for a total of $21,250 from a certain Robert Taylor Preston, son of the then Governor of Virginia, James Patton Preston. And so, the birth of a new institution took place, a state-supported land-grant military institute christened 'Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College.'

Our tale begins with the first student, Addison 'Add' Caldwell, who braved a 25-mile journey on foot from his home in Craig County, Virginia. On October 1, 1872, he became the first to register in this budding institution. A monument stands today on the Upper Quad of the campus, reminiscent of Addison's arduous journey. Today, first-year cadets retrace Addison's Caldwell's journey annually in a march that is completed half in the fall and the remainder in the spring.

In the early years, the first five presidents of Virginia were served in the Confederate States Army or the Confederate government during the Civil War, woven into the fabric of the institute's history. James H. Lane, a VMI graduate and former Confederate General taught civil engineering and commerce. Quite fittingly, Lane Hall, one of the oldest buildings on campus, pays homage to this pioneer.

that whisk us back to a different time. Imagine a time when waving the Confederate Battle Flag at football games was tradition and ‘Dixie’ set the backdrop for scoring a touchdown. Over time, the winds of change blew away racial indifference, and in the late 1960s, Marguerite Harper, a black woman studying on a Rockefeller scholarship, moved a successful resolution to end the display of the Confederate Flag at athletic events. Following this momentous change, uproar ensued leading to a large demonstration, and sadly, hate mail and threatening phone calls were sent to Harper and her white roommate.

Under leadership from the seventh president, Joseph Dupuy Eggleston (1913-1919), the university established a Reserve Officer Training Corps, dedicated to the service of national efforts during World War I. The year 1917 saw a shocking event — Charles E. Vawter, Jr., a physics professor, shot Stockton Heth, Jr. — a scion of one of the wealthiest families in Montgomery County, right in his campus home. The sensational murder trial that followed couldn't quite overshadow the mounting tensions of the World War at the time.

Over time, as academic programs evolved, the original Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College underwent a name change in 1896 to include 'Polytechnic Institute', set in motion by the then president, John McLaren McBryde. Years later, in 1944, the title was officially changed to Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI.) It was only in 1970 when becoming a university that it was given its present legal name, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Today, it is fondly known as Virginia Tech.

A milestone reached in 1921 was the admission of the first female students. However, witnessing real change take more years. In 1943, VPI merged with Radford State Teachers College, becoming VPI's women's division — this merger was dissolved in 1964. Today, Radford University is an esteemed co-educational research university, providing more than 150 undergraduate and graduate programs.

It wasn't until 1953 that VPI pushed past its racial boundaries — under President Walter Stephenson Newman's leadership, VPI became the first historically white, four-year public institution in the former Confederacy to admit a black undergraduate. Charlie L. Yates, who graduated in 1958, was the first African American to earn a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, and became an enduring symbol of breaking racial barriers.

The university continued to grow into a major co-educational research university under President T. Marshall Hahn (1962-1974). Growth over these few decades transformed the university by leaps and bounds, both in its physical footprint and its student population. The university caught the public eye for a $500 million haul in research expenditures in 2014.

Today's Virginia Tech is a testament to the relentless pursuit of knowledge, progress and inclusion. From the humble beginnings of the first student marching 25 miles to enroll, to the ambitious plans to open a million-square-foot campus adjacent to Amazon's second headquarters for a $1 billion graduate research center, the Institution is forging ahead. With the faculty determined to continue providing quality and innovative education, there's no questioning that Virginia Tech will continue to inspire and shape the
