The year was 1899. Daniel B Dougherty had just donated the piece of land that would soon come alive with the clamour of thoughts and learning. His sons, Blanford and Dauphin Dougherty, were spearheading a cause for change – they were eager to bring education to the teachers in their North Carolina town, Watauga.
Imagine the old wood-frame building, built through the generosity of the town's people and costing a humble $1000, standing proudly as a beacon of knowledge. As autumn swept the town in a whirlwind of brightly coloured leaves, the Dougherty brothers unlocked the doors of this building, fondly called the Watauga Academy. The journey began with 53 eager learners.
By 1903, word had travelled, and other counties were taking notice. Anticipating State support due to growing public interest, Dauphin Dougherty journeyed to the state capital, Raleigh – carrying with him an academic dream inked on a draft bill. State leaders like W.C. Newland, Captain E.F. Lovill, R.B. White, Clyde Hoey and E.J. Justice lent their voices to his cause. March 9th, 1903 made history as the Appalachian Training School for Teachers was established, supported with $2,000 from the State and an enrolment of 325 students.
From 1903 to 1925, the small Academy thrived. Knowledge blossomed and spread, serving the needs of the state. With increased funding and a facelift, the Appalachian State Normal School was the new name on everyone's lips.
1929 brought the advent of fresh opportunities as the School became a degree granting institution, morphing into the Appalachian State Teachers College. The study halls now echoed with debates on maths equations, English literature, history, science and education, and over 1,300 students were part of this academic melting pot.
The 1930s and 40s saw a sea change - with the Teacher’s College collecting accolades and credibility from the American Association for Teacher Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. 1948 was a milestone as a Graduate School was born, broadening the scopes of higher education.
Dr William H Plemmons assumed leadership in 1955, post the well-deserved retirement of Dr Dougherty. Under his torch, the campus expanded with new infrastructures pushing up against the sky while enrolments swelled to nearly 5,000.
In 1967, the Appalachian State Teacher's College took a leap to become Appalachian State University, expanding its mission into a multipurpose regional centre of knowledge. By the 1970s, the University saw an impressive growth of 9,500 students and 550 faculty members integrating four degree-granting undergraduate colleges – Arts and Sciences, Business, Fine and Applied Arts, and Education.
Mountain laurels bloomed and bestowed their beauty on the university as Dr Herbert Wey took the mantel from Plemmons in 1969, becoming the Chancellor in 1971. It was during his tenure in 1972 when Appalachian State University joined the prestigious University of North Carolina system, crowning it the jewel in its educational crown.
And just like that, from a humble beginning in a small corner of North Carolina, Appalachian State University stands tall as a beacon of educational excellence.
