History Boston Architectural College

Imagine journeying back in time to December 11, 1889. On this significant day in architectural history, a passionate group of individuals established the Boston Architectural Club. Their shared vision? To create a community for those passionate about architecture and provide a platform for learning, sharing knowledge and creative exhibitions. A fitting testament to their dedication, members of the club volunteered to teach evening classes for drafters in their offices, heralding the birth of a remarkable atelier reminiscent of France's famed École des Beaux-Arts.

Bertrand E. Taylor, one of the charter members, actively participated in the Club’s public exhibitions and contributed significantly to their beautifully illustrated catalogs. This was just the beginning of an exhilarating journey towards establishing a prestigious education institution. With stalwarts like H. Langford Warren and Clarence Blackall pioneering the effort, the informal education forum evolved, offering evening classes focusing on drawing, design, history and structures.

Fast forward to 1911, the Club proudly occupied a building at 16 Somerset Street on Beacon Hill. A majestic two-story Great Hall designed by Ralph Adams Cram became the heart of their operation, hosting lectures, meetings and exhibitions. Art flowed through the hallways, a library nested in one corner and several studios bustling with passionate creators, making it a beacon of learning for more students.

The 1930s witnessed a pivotal change in American Architecture. Schools were distancing themselves from the Beaux-Arts tradition, paving their own paths with unique curricula and teaching methods. The Boston Architectural Club too faced this challenge, amidst the absence of university support. But onward they marched, appointing Arcangelo Cascieri as dean, who skillfully steered them through this philosophical transition while preserving the cherished atelier teaching method.

Then, in 1944, the Club underwent a strategic reformation, adopting the name Boston Architectural Center. The Center aimed to offer architecture and related disciplines to those working individuals who couldn't avail day schooling. This shift was an essential development within the Center, expanding its educational outreach to a bigger community.

Maintaining their momentum, the Boston Architectural Center established a Continuing Education Program by 1965. However, the Somerset Street building was no longer sufficient, leading to the Center's acquisition of the brick building at 320 Newbury Street. The Center discovered its new home through a national design competition won by Ashley, Myer & Associates who proposed the Brutalist structure in 1964, which continues to house the Center now known as the Boston Architectural College.

Thriving and evolving, Boston Architectural Center adopted the name Boston Architectural College on July 1, 2006. This change was a message to the world about its vast leaps from a social club to a renowned higher education institution bestowing accredited degrees in architecture and design.

In 2007, the College expanded, purchasing the former home of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, 951/955 Boylston Street, for approximately $7.22 million. Today, the 25,423-square-foot complex provides a vibrant space for student studios, lectures and also includes a sprawling hall on the ground level.

Adding another architectural jewel to its crown, the College acquired the former Back Bay Police Station Division 16, constructed in 1887. It had served as the Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art. Now equipped with student meeting places, studios, a lecture hall, and a gallery, it brings with it a universally accessible entrance, symbolising Boston Architectural College's commitment to inclusivity.

Rewinding through this exciting timeline, one can't help but feel inspired by the transformation of a humble architectural club to a prestigious institution, shaping the creative minds of the future. Boston Architectural College is a testament to the power of vision, collaboration, and relentless dedication. It's your chance to be part of this legacy. The question is, are you ready to shape the world around you?
