His efforts culminated in 1857, when he bought a plot of land on Harrison Avenue in the South End neighborhood of Boston for "The Boston College".
The new college was quite modest, with just two buildings - a schoolhouse and a church. It opens its doors in 1859 to its very first batch of students. Unfortunately, various challenges such as the outbreak of Civil War and disagreement over the college's finances led to its temporary closure. Boston College faced a daunting task of acquiring a charter from the anti-Catholic Massachusetts legislature.
